NC State Coach Tom O'Brien announced last night on his radio show that Redshirt Freshmen Mario Carter will miss the entirety of the '09 football season. Carter had surgery on his knee last week, and originally the prognosis wasn't detrimental, but it turns out that the injury was more severe than originally thought. This is tremendously dissapointing for both Carter and the Pack.
Carter redshirted last season after sitting out a majority of his Senior season at Charlotte Independence High School due to a knee injury. Back in the Spring, Carter was one of the standout players in the Red/White game. Carter added a great 1-2 punch at the Tight End position alongside of starter George Bryan.
The importance of Redshirt Senior Matt Kushner stepping up this year has become much more vital. Kushner sat out a majority of last season due a knee injury that he suffered in the William & Mary game, a game in which he started.

I was really looking forward to Mario making a big contribution as a R.Fresh. Gotta feel for the young man....
Ugh, how many ppl are we going to lose before the season starts.
Unfortunately that makes 4 NC State players that are out for the season:
Nate Irving, Denzelle Good, Everett Proctor and Mario Carter.
WPH, any idea where Donald Bowens and Javon Walker stand wrt getting back on the field?
If there is a bright side it's that they are all backups escept for Nate. Hey, I have to feel good about small victories being a State fan.
I'm glad that this has finally come out. The bright side of this is that he can use his redshirt year. If everything goes right, or at least mostly right, we are going to have A LOT of talent on this team in 2010. This year may be a bit of a struggle, but I'll say it again, "Look out for 2010!" Go Pack!
PPack correct me if im wrong but Mario already used his med redshirt last year. But I do know some circumstances where a second medical hardship year has been rewarded to the player (ex Toney Baker Hopefully)
PL - You are correct about Mario's RS. I'm trying to look on the bright side here!
I'm living in my own little "happy" world, like Bob Ross! :/
Feel terrible for Mario. He was one o0g the first who signed to come aboard the new regime at state under Coach O'Brien and he seems to be the might fit physically and mentally to to thrive in that system. Unfortunately life can be cruel and football gruesome on top of that. Heel up quick and maybe get in a Bowl season practice or two Mario.
On a side note this will provide an opportunity on the depth chart behind the experienced TE's going into the opener. Between Talbert, Tway? (walk-on) and Watson I would put money on Watson playing snaps against USC. How awesome would it be for one of the stars of South Carolina's Shrine team come back and kick some Gamecock tail. If he has more Catchs/yrds/tds then Saunders then we will really be crowing it up.
