Stats from the First Scrimmage

Today, the 2009 Wolfpack Football Team played their first scrimmage. The game was closed off to the media, but we were on hand afterwards to bring you all the stats we could gather from Coach O'Brien, who was on hand to answer questions. While individual offensive statistics were not given, he did provide us with a few overall offensive stats, and individual defensive stats. We will have more from the interview with Coach O'Brien later.

- Wilson and Glennon combined 20 of 31 for 168 yds; 1 TD and 3 INTS

-RB's rushed the ball 27 times for 103 yds

- The leading tackler was JR Sweezy who gave a nice line of 6 tackles, 3 for loss (including 2 sacks)

-Sterling Lucas - 6 tackles 1 for loss

- Rashard Smith 77 yard interception return for TD

- Koyal George had a 33 yd interception return

- CJ Wilson added an interception in the end zone

- Sylvester Crawford had 3 tackles, all for loss

- Chris Ward let the way punting with 2 for 97 yards

Our devensive backs may be better than expected. Or maybe the Qbs had a bad day.

Sounds like the def pressure made the QB's get rid of the ball too early or in spots they didnt want to. 3 INTs is not a good day, infact thats more than Wilson had all year, but ones gotta think the def knows the offense pretty well so hopefully its better news for the def rather than bad new for the offense. interesting Sweezy and Lucas were the top LB's considering they wernt as hyped as the other guys. I keep hearing great things about K George and i tell you right, if he knows the system as well as they say he could be the sleeper on our def and really turn out to be the silver lining.

Sweezy is a DT, not a LB, fwiw.

TOB singled out Rashard Smith. Do you think it's for motivational reasons or has he already decided to burn his redshirt?

Were they tackling the qb's in this game or was it just touch? During the spring game they were calling sacks that Russell definitely would have gotten out of.

I wouldn't read too much into the ints. It was probably a controlled, situational, scrimmage (or at least partially). Also, more than likely, Glennon and Wilson were not the only ones taking snaps at QB.

Could've been simply a bad day by the QB's, and/or the ints were results of the scripted situations. Goal line offense vs defense, 3rd/4th and long, 2 min drills, etc... Probably why O'Brien didn't give individual offensive stats - the scrimmage structure did not provide for stats indicative of the individual performances.

Note TOB did mention individual performances for the defense. I'm betting TOB is playing mind games, to motivate and/or give confidence.

Sweezy played MLB in high school, then was moved to DE, then DT this year.

We REALLY need a young DB or 2 to step up and take a spot. Maybe Smith will be one of them!
