Taking Off The Red Shirt: Mike Glennon

Last season we had some of our best talent wearing 'red shirts' on the sidelines. We thought it might be helpful to re-introduce this crew of untapped talent that is hungry to get on the field. We will be doing this in individual installments to give each athlete the detailed attention that they deserve.

This first installment of 'Taking off the Red Shirts' will feature none other than Quarterback Mike Glennon.

Allow me the privilege of re-introducing the 2007 Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year: Mike Glennon. Some kids fly under the radar and some kids get tracked by a satellite in outer space. Let's just say that Mike didn't fly under the radar. Mike was also given the accolades of AP State Player of the Year and 1st Team All-State in Virginia. He also garnered attention on a National scale checking in as the #3 QB in his class according to Rivals and the #5 according to Scout. This 4 Star phenom threw for 2,548 yards in his Senior campaign with 32 TD's (Only 7 Interceptions). Mike's last name is Glennon, not Vick, yet he did manage to run in for 7 touches as well (This 6'6 QB has clocked in at a 4.82 40). ESPN said that Mike was "one of the most accurate passers in the 2007 class." In his Junior campaign he completed 60% of his throws and then he upped the ante his Senior year when he connected 65% of the time. It would be an understatement to say that Mike came into the NC State Football program with a knack for winning. Mike led his Westfield team to two consecutive undefeated regulars seasons. He helped his squad make history his Senior season by claiming the State Title with the first 15-0 season in State history. One of the things that people were concerned with about Mike was that he needed to bulk up, yet most believed that he had the frame to do so. There is nothing like a recipe of one year in a College Football Strength/Conditioning regiment. Mike came in out of high school at 195 pounds and he steps on the scale now at a solid 211 pounds.

Credit should be given to Coach O'Brien and his staff for snagging Mike. Mike also held offers from FSU, Florida, Michigan, Michigan St., Virginia, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Duke, Purdue and Rutgers.

Glennon was quoted in the Roanoke Times in an article from June 29, 2007 as saying “They said that I’m the closest thing to Matt Ryan that they’ve seen. They want me to be the Matt Ryan of N.C. State.” If the coaching staff can mold this kid in the model of Ryan, the future of NC State Football seems to be in good hands.

While the QB spot seems firmly in the grips of Russel Wilson, which we think is a no brainer, Glennon is putting together a productive Spring thus far. In last weeks Spring scrimmage he went 16-19 for 143 yards and 1 touch. In the first Spring Scrimmage he went 7-16 for 133 and a touch.
