Baker Granted 6th Year

Coach O'Brien had some good news after practice on Thursday night, announcing that running back Toney Baker had been granted a 6th year of eligibility by the NCAA. O'Brien said that he hadn't talked in detail with Baker about his future, and that they would do so after the season. This is great news for both Baker and the football program. Baker has worked extremely hard to get back to where he is, and has reminded everyone of how special of a player he can be.

Baker is 11th all-time in NC State in rushing yards (1,936) and in rushing touchdowns (17). If Toney decides to come back next season, he could solidify himself as one of the best backs in NC State history.

NC State head football coach Tom O'Brien has been informed by Doug Rhoads, head of ACC football officials, that the play that the Wolfpack coaching staff challenged in the third quarter of last Saturday's game versus Clemson was a fumble and should have been overturned, giving NC State the football. Key Quotes

"I think the question was asked this past Saturday if we were going to start playing for next year, and certainly we're not, we still have two games left this year. And the biggest one is this week versus Virginia Tech. We're going to try to be a much better football team and get out on the practice field this week and see if we can make some improvements."

"I think most of the seniors are playing really hard. It's their last year and you would expect that. We just don't have enough of them. Cash and Burgess probably played their best games of the year this past Saturday. A lot of guys are still competing and playing hard, and some guys are trying to do too much, and that's part of the problem."

"Right now Lemon and McKeen are probably even, and they will probably split time evenly from here on out."

"I think Ray Michel is still not 100%. He's giving us everything he can, but he had a 4-6 week injury and it's only been 4 weeks."

"We were too aggressive. We overran things. We didn't stay behind the football the way we should have. We got too aggressive."

"Certainly, if Jarvis Byrd hits you, your gonna go down, and thus far, knock on wood, that's a good thing."

"I think the quarterback (Wilson) is very confident when he throws him (Williams) the ball. I think that's a big plus. I think he's learned to use his size and power to his advantage. He's a big target and tough to get a handle on, especially if the ball gets up high."

"George is probably skilled more as an offensive player, but with all of the issues we had in the secondary, we tried to play him there, but he wasn't as good there as he is at wide receiver."

"I don't think Donald is back to full-speed. He's been slowed down by the knee. I don't know if he ever really got in shape. He's fighting through it and giving us the best he can, but he certainly doesn't look like he did during our first year here."

"I think Audie is still learning. Linebacker is not a natural position for him. He's a guy that has to see some things, but once he see's them, he gets it. He's a great effort guy. I think in time he will end up being a really good player for us."

NC State Commits: Week 13 Recap

David Amerson (S) - Dudley (11-1) had no trouble putting points on the board in their first round match-up against Smith, beating their rival 47-20. With the seconds ticking off the clock at the end of the first half, NC State commit David Amerson ran back a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown to put the Panthers up 21-14 at the half. Dudley will play High Point Central this Friday in the second round.

Tony Creecy (WR)
- The Southern Durham (11-1) Spartans beat East Wake 34-20 on Friday night to advance to the second round of the state playoffs. NC State commit Tony Creecy gave the Spartans a boost with 3 receptions for 85 yards, with one of them being a 46-yard touchdown reception. Southern Durham will play Athens Drive this Friday in the second round of the playoffs. Wolfpack fans should head out to Southern Durham this Friday night to show their support.

Robert Crisp (OT) and Pete Singer (S)
- Person was not able to stop the Athens Drive Jaguars' (9-3) air attack, which piled on 356 yards passing. NC State commit Pete Singer had 2 receptions for 17 yards in Athens Drive's 35-17 first round win over Person. The Jags will face Tony Creecy's Southern Durham squad in the second round this Friday.

DJ Green (S) - Westside (10-1) was dominant in the first round of the Georgia state playoffs, defeating Mt. Zion 33-7. The Seminoles will travel to Lakeside this Friday in the second round.

Thomas Teal (DT) - Marlboro County (12-0) remained undefeated this weekend, crushing Socastee 41-3. The Bulldogs will face Lake City this Friday in the second round.

While Brosius only completed 8 of his 19 passes for 119 yards, he still was responsible for both of the Mountaineer's touchdowns, throwing for two touchdowns. Tuscola will play Burns this Friday in the second round.

Torian Box (OT) - North Clayton (9-2) won their first round game over Bainbridge this past Friday night by the score of 19-7. The Eagles will play Brunswick this Friday in the second round.

Tobais Palmer (RB) - Georgia Military College handled their business this past Saturday, defeating Lackawanna 35-7. Tobais Palmer had a 1-yard touchdown run in the contest. Coming into the game, Palmer had run for 614 yards and 10 touchdowns in 8 games (7.9 yards a carry).

Russell Wilson has 26 touchdown throws this season, the second-highest total in school history for a single year, trailing Philip Rivers’ record of 34 in 2003. Wilson has also accounted for 30 touchdowns on the season (four rushing), tying for second all-time and it is the most since Philip Rivers was responsible for 30 in 2002. Wilson ranks fourth in career responsibility with 51, and needs one more to tie for third place.
Russell Wilson has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 18 of his 21 career games at quarterback and has thrown two or more scores in 14 games of those games (he played one snap of special teams only against USF last season).
Koyal George caught his second career touchdown in the first half, and first since the Virginia game in 2007 when he was a wide receiver and had three catches for 54 yards and that score. He switched to defense in 2008 and started five games at corner this season before switching back to offense during the bye week.
Jarvis Williams caught his eighth and ninth touchdowns of the season. The nine scores rank as the sixth-best single season total in school history. It was the most in a single season for a Wolfpack receiver since Jerricho Cotchery had 10 in 2003.
• NC State started its eighth different secondary combo in 10 games when NC State started three freshman and senior Clem Johnson. Brandan Bishop, C.J. Wilson and Jarvis Byrd also started.
• For the first time this season NC State started a different defensive line combination. The combo of Willie Young, Shea McKeen, Leroy Burgess, and Alan-Michael Cash started together in the first nine games until Michael Lemon started for McKeen against Clemson.
• Redshirt freshman Mike Glennon threw his first career touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Clemson Crushes Pack's Postseason Dreams 43-23

The Wolfpack couldn't keep up with the Tigers on Saturday, as they were defeated 43-23. The Wolfpack put up a fight early on, but they were no match for the electricity and game changing ability of CJ Spiller. Spiller was everywhere against NC State, becoming the first player in Clemson history to throw, catch, and run for a touchdown in the same game.

In the first half, it was Clemson's defense that was the story. The Tigers held the Wolfpack to only 114 total yards and held Wilson without a completion until the 9:12 mark in the second quarter. Wilson could never get comfortable, constantly flushed from the pocket, and sacked twice. Aside from a late scoring drive (Wilson to Koyal George, 18 yard TD), fueled by two third down Clemson penalties that kept the drive alive, the Pack offense was held lifeless.

The Clemson offense wasn't too shabby either putting up 24 points, and relying heavily on Spiller. The Pack had trouble containing the shifty playmaker, who not only rushed for 57 yards, but also threw a 12 yard touchdown and constantly gave the Tiger's great field position as NC State continuously squibbed kicks to keep them out of Spillers hands.

At the end of the half, Clemson had the 24-7 lead.

In the second half, the Wolfpack offense came out and started to show signs of life. Russell Wilson immediately led the Pack on a 75 yard scoring drive, capped off by an 8 yard TD pass to Jarvis Williams, bringing the Pack within 10, however, it wasn't long before Clemson struck back, and once again, with CJ Spiller. After NC State kicked the ball out of bounds on the ensuing kick-off, Clemson drove the short field and Spiller punched it in with an impressive 16 yard rush. The score gave CJ Clemson's all-time all-purpose yards record with 1,890 already this season.

The Pack added a field goal, but Spiller continued to pour it on, this time as a receiver. CJ came out of the backfield uncovered and caught a 34 yard touchdown down the right sideline. Clemson touched up the Pack for another score, including a 69 yard touchdown run by Jamie Harper. Mike Glennon led NC State down the field for a two yard touchdown to Jarvis Williams with three seconds on the clock, but it was much too little, much too late for the Wolfpack.

With the loss, the Wolfpack falls to 4-6 and 1-5 in the ACC. The loss also eliminates them from postseason play, giving the Pack only two games left to play in 2009. Stay tuned as we'll be updating you with player and coach postgame interviews and stats.

Game Preview: NC State Wolfpack vs. Clemson Tigers

Kickoff: 12 Noon
Location: Carter Finley Stadium, Raleigh, NC
Television: Raycom
Records: Wolfpack (4-5, 1-4 ACC) , Clemson (6-3, 4-2 ACC)

THE MATCH-UP
Coming into this weekend's game against the Clemson Tigers, Tom O'Brien and the Wolfpack know that it's basically a 'win or go home' scenario. Although there are still two games left to play after Clemson, a loss would mean that the Pack's post season dreams will be squashed as they will be ineligible for bowl play. That being said, NC State has made a habit of late season surges under head coach Tom O'Brien. Last season, when faced with a nearly identical scenario, Russell Wilson took the reigns and led the Pack to a four game winning streak and an unexpected bowl birth.

Last week, with their backs against the wall, the Wolfpack defense stepped up and Russell Wilson guided the Wolfpack offense to a season saving victory against Maryland. This week the task will be much bigger, and the stakes will be much the same. Clemson sports an elite offensive attack, headed by senior running back and electric playmaker, CJ Spiller. Spiller has already eclipsed the 1000 combined yard mark this season with his ability to dominate on the ground and also pitch in with receiving duties. He's touched the zone 8 times, 5 on the ground and 3 through the air. The elusive Spiller is surely one of the ACC's most exciting players, and will take full focus for the Wolfpack to slow him down.

The Clemson defense has been good this season, but have yet to face a game changer of Russell Wilson's caliber. Wilson, already with 24 touchdowns, is coming off a solid performance in which he threw for 343 yards and three touchdowns. Wilson will look for help from the resurgent Toney Baker, who coming off a knee injury this season, has been one of the most consistent performers for O'Brien's Wolfpack, averaging a gaudy 5.2 yards per carry.

The question for the Wolfpack will be the question they've faced all season long. Will their defense show up? The NC State defense has been much improved over the past few contests, but still has some work to do. If the secondary can hold up again, and the front line can contain Spiller, the Pack could most definitely pull off the unthinkable against Clemson.

PACK HOPES TO BREAK LOSING STREAK TO TIGERS*
NC State has dropped the past five games to Clemson, a streak which ties the longest in the series history between the two schools.

Clemson leads the series handily at 49-27-1, but the results have been much closer in games played in Raleigh (17-15 in favor of the Tigers). In 20 matchups at Carter-Finley, each team has won 10.

THE TEXTILE BOWL*
Although not many of the players in uniform know about it, for the past 28 years (since 1981), the series between NC State and Clemson has been dubbed the Textile Bowl, as that industry has such a major economic impact on both states and both schools boast renowned textile colleges.

The North Carolina textile manufacturers donate money to NC State's scholarship fund every year in honor of the Pack's MVP from the game. Clemson posts a 19-9 advantage in the Textile Bowl.

A NOVEMBER TO REMEMBER*
November has been good to the Pack under Tom O'Brien's tutelage. Including last week's win over Maryland, NC State boats a 7-2 record in the 11th month, including a 4-0 November slate in 2008.

Jerricho Cotchery: 'It's Always Fun To Come Back'

Last Saturday, at NC State's homecoming versus Maryland, Jerricho Cotchery was proud to stand before all of the Wolfpack fans in the end zone. Before leaving to go on to the NFL, Cotchery left a legacy as on of the best players to ever play for NC State. One look at the NC State record books, and it is obvious why the crowd in Carter-Finley stood in roaring applause this past Saturday. Cotchery is NC State's all-time leader in receptions, with 200 (ranks 4th in ACC history), and also holds the all-time record for the most career 100-yard receiving games, with 15 (ranks 2nd in ACC history). He also finished second in school history behind Torry Holt in receiving yards (3,119) and receiving touchdowns (21). Jerricho is one of two people in ACC history to collect 200 receptions and 3,000 yards in his collegiate career (the other player is former FSU wide receiver Peter Warrick).

Cotchery was drafted in the 4th round of the 2004 NFL draft by the New York Jets. After reeling in 82 receptions for 961 yards and 6 touchdowns in his third year in the NFL, which was the final year of his rookie contract, the Jets signed Cotchery to a 5-year extension worth $19 million in March of 2007. Since then, Jerricho has gone on to become the 3rd receiver in Jets history to record three consecutive seasons of 70-or-more receptions.

Jerricho started off this season as the number #1 option for the Jets, and was living up to the title until he was sidelined after Week 4 with a hamstring injury. Before the injury, Cotchery was ranked 5th in the NFL in receiving yards. In his first game back from injury this past Sunday versus the Dolphins, Cotchery looked like he was back to early season form, reeling in 3 receptions for 70 yards.

The Wolfpack had one of their all-time best back in Carter-Finley this past Saturday, and the atmosphere in the stadium brought back a lot of memories for Cotchery.

"It's always fun to come back down here. The atmosphere is just so great," Cotchery said. "The fans are going crazy all the time, supporting the team no matter what. It just brings back a lot of great memories when you come back here."

Cotchery also forecasts good things for the future of the NC State football program, trusting that Coach O'Brien is the right man for the job.

"Coach O'Brien is doing a great job," Cotchery said. "We're fighting injuries a lot, but those guys are still out there battling hard, and I think we'll be able to turn it around."

Wolfpack fans have to be proud of having a player like Cothcery represent their school so well. Not only is Jerricho a tremendous player, but he is also a tremendous person off the field as well. Back in '06, Cotchery received the Kyle Clifton Good Guy Award, which recognizes consistent willingness, cooperation and professionalism in everyday dealings with the various departments in the organization. In '07 he was selected by the Jets staff as the 2007 Marty Lyons Award winner, given to the player who gives from the heart through charity and community involvement. The United Way in New York City also dubbed Cotchery as a Hometown Hero in '07 for his work off the field. He also established the Cotchery Foundation in 2007, which was formed for the purpose of inspiring children to conceive and achieve goals by providing programs and services designed to enhance their futures.

Check out all the great work that Cotchery is doing at the Cotchery Foundation.

Leroy Burgess: 'A Homecoming Birthday Present'

This past Saturday was Senior Leroy Burgess' 22nd birthday. He told all of his teammates that all he wanted for his birthday was a win over the Maryland Terrapins. The defensive unit came together, and helped Burgess get his birtday wish.

"It was a tremendous improvement," Burgess said. "It felt good to finally get off the field and make some three-and-outs. We finally got to feel what that felt like again."

The Wolfpack have to be excited with the win over Maryland on homecoming, but their eyes are now on the red-hot Clemson Tigers who are rolling into town this weekend. Burgess and the rest of the defensive unit have a chip on their shoulder, and they are looking to prove their critic's wrong this weekend.

"As a defensive line we talked about the fact that they are high on the mountain right now. They're a little cocky after beating Miami and FSU," Burgess said. "They're comfortable. They probably think they are going to come in here and do their thing all over us. We just want to go out there and prove to our critic's that we can play football."

Recap of Coach O'Brien's Radio Show (11/09/09)

-Coach O'Brien was really impressed with the offensive line and the running back's ability to block this past Saturday against Maryland. Maryland came into the game as the ACC leader in sacks, with 21. The Pack only allowed one sack on Saturday. O'Brien said that he has never had 2 running backs that picked up blitzes the way that Baker and Eugene do.

-Someone called in and asked: 'Have you considered giving Glennon more playing time since it is uncertain whether Wilson would be back next year?' O'Brien said 'no' because he is playing for this season. It would be a disservice to Russell to sit him.

-O'Brien thought that Andrew Wallace did a great job filling in for the sick Vermiglio (flu). He described Wallace as a tough kid who works really hard. Coach O'Brien tells everyone to be ready to go on a moments notice. Both Wallace and O'Brien found out that Vermiglio wasn't going to be able to play this past Saturday 45 minutes before kickoff.

-When a caller asked O'Brien about his recruiting strategy, he said that they recruit the state of North Carolina first, and work outside of North Carolina only when they can't fill their needs from within. Coach O'Brien has played 7 true freshmen this season, which is an all-time high for him.

-When asked if the good defensive play against Maryland was due to Turner going down or solid preparation, O'Brien said that as a whole the defense had less mistakes on assignments. Certain players stepped up and played better. The key performer was Alan-Michael Cash, who had 8 quarterback hurries in the game.

-O'Brien believes that Clemson's offense is more wide-open than Pittsburgh's. They try to get CJ Spiller involved in many different ways. In O'Brien's opinion, he is the best player in the conference so far.

-A caller asked: 'Would it be worth it to recruit a kicker that just did kickoffs?' O'Brien responded by saying 'Absolutely.' They have brought in a soccer player to try, and even though he has been working for a couple of weeks, he still isn't as efficient as Czajkowski.

-A caller asked: 'Is George Bryan one of the best tight ends you have coached?' O'Brien said 'Yes,' because he has tremendous hands and rarely drops the football. He referenced Bryan's unbelievable catch against Boston College last season. He is a lot stronger in his conditioning than when he arrived on campus. Bryan can also be counted on to arrive early to practice and to stay afterwards as well.

-O'Brien talked about how Jarvis Byrd was really effective at stopping the run. He's not afraid to stick his face in there and tackle.

McCuller: Offensive Line State of Mind

Team captain and senior, Jeraill McCuller wasn't about to let the season slip away last week against Maryland, not in his final season with the Wolfpack. With NC State having lost their previous four games, and only one loss away from kissing their bowl dreams goodbye, McCuller knew things had to change. With the players and the coaches trying to figure out what went wrong this season, and attempting to fix it with team meetings and player pep talks over the past four weeks, Jeraill realized that to save this season it was going to take more than words.

"It gets to the point where everything has already been said and you know, we lost a couple games in a row. I'd speak my mind, Willie (Young) would speak his mind, and the coaches would always be talking, trying to get everybody on the same page, but there comes a point where enough talking has been done and it's time to just go out there and put it all together. It just got to the point where we had a meeting on Friday and it lasted only two seconds. It was like "Enough's been said, let's go win" and that's how we broke it down and got the job done." he said.

On the field against Maryland, the team looked crisp, focused and in control. The defense made stops and the offense was clicking on all cylinders again. For the first time in ACC play, the Wolfpack looked like a competitive football team, McCuller explained why...

"The whole focus was different. Guys were just like "Enough is enough." We're way too talented of a team to be on a four game losing streak, so we were like "It's time to get it together." I think it really showed on Saturday. Guys were really focused throughout the game."
With Maryland needing the victory as much as the Wolfpack, nothing came easy. The Terps threw everything they had at NC State. Their goal was to have their defense throw Pack quarterback Russell Wilson off of his game with complex blitz packages that would come from every angle. That, however, didn't work as the NC State front line stepped up with help from the running backs, and only allowed one sack to the ACC's leader in sacks.

"Maryland was throwing everything they had at us, zig zagging, stunting, and the way the line, the running backs and the quarterback cooperated, was just a good thing. Offensive linemen blocked, running backs blocked and the quarterback made the right read and we came out on top...it's a good day for the good guys" said McCuller.

One bright spot during ACC play for the Pack has been the play of the offensive line, opening up running lanes and giving quarterback Russell Wilson time to sit in the pocket and make plays. Against Maryland it was more of the same, as Toney Baker and Jamelle Eugene were once again successful on the ground, allowing the Wolfpack to control the clock and pace of the game. The running game is something that has been consistently good throughout the season and you can thank the big men up front for opening up the holes and setting the tone with a mindset that all their own."We do take pride in having our running backs average over 5 yards per carry, and we look forward to going out there and running it down people's throats." McCuller said emphatically.

The ability to display leadership and perseverance through adversity is why Jeraill McCuller wears the "C" for this Wolfpack team. His positive attitude and constant motivation is something that has the younger guys buying into the feeling that this season is far from lost. With three more games on the schedule, McCuller is making sure everyone knows that winning out is not an option, it must be done. His teammates are buying in and things feel like they might be changing once again in Raleigh, just in time, something Jeraill has started to notice...

"I think everyone is just believing in one another. I like the direction that practice's are going right now. I feel that there's a lot of competition, guys are flying around and it just speaks volumes of the character of this team because we've been through so much, and guys are still in it like we're undefeated."

4-Star Safety Amerson Commits!

Safety David Amerson has listed the Wolfpack as his leader for a majority of his recruitment. As of late, some people thought that Amerson's recent visit to Notre Dame might have changed the Safety's mind. Amerson proved that his heart was always with the Wolfpack, committing to NC State tonight.

Amerson leads a stingy defense for the 10-1 Dudley Panthers. Dudley is the #2 seed in the 4-A state playoffs, and will face off against Ben L. Smith High School on Friday night. Amerson was selected to the 73rd annual Shrine Bowl, representing the state of North Carolina. Last season, as a Junior, he tallied 60 tackles and 9 interceptions.

ESPN ranks Amerson as the #14 Safety in the 2010 class (Rivals ranks him #19 and Scout ranks him #56). This young man stands 6'3" and weighs in at 182 pounds. Amerson is tremendously athletic, running a 4.5 40-yard dash, a 36-inch vertical jump and a 455 pound squat max. He also is very intelligent, boasting a 3.5 GPA and a 1310 on the SAT.

This is a huge commitment for Coach O'Brien and his staff. Amerson is the 4th Safety in the 2010 recruiting class for the Pack. Recruiting the state of North Carolina has been one of O'Brien's top priorities since arriving, and the 2010 class is stacked with some of the best talent in the state. With Amerson's commitment, NC State practically has commitments from 4 of North Carolina's top-10 players. With the Wolfpack secondary being an area of concern over the past couple of seasons, it is encouraging to see the commitment of one of the best Safety's in the 2010 class.

ESPN has a free video of Amerson on his profile.

With Backs Against the Wall, Wolfpack Delivers Against Maryland

With their backs against the wall, and needing a victory to keep their post-season hopes alive, Tom O'Brien's Wolfpack finally caught a few breaks and took out Maryland 38-31 for their first ACC victory of the season.

Russell Wilson, Jarvis Williams and Toney Baker paced the offense, and the NC State defense finally got things back on track allowing only 270 yards of total offense. The Pack controlled the pace, dominating time of possession 34:55 to Marylands 25:05, thanks to Baker's chain moving runs and Wilson's efficiency. Russell was 25-38 (66%), marking his 2nd best completion percentage of the season in ACC play. Although he did throw an uncharacteristic 3 interceptions, he spread the ball all over the field, giving the Maryland secondary fits and keeping them guessing, as he hit 10 different receivers on the day. His favorite target was Jarvis Williams, who had 7 receptions for 107 yards, marking the second highest total of his career. Donald Bowens also got in on the action with a 35-yard touchdown down the right sideline. It was Donald's first touchdown in two seasons, thanks to two unfortunate injuries that held him out all of last season. The chemistry between the Wilson and the receivers looks to be improving every game, and teams are having trouble stopping matching up with the over-sized Wolfpack wideouts, something coach Tom O'Brien talked about after the game.

"We made some really big catches, especially on the boundary and on the deep balls. One advantage we have is size. We are really happy to come away with a win and you have to give maryland credit for hanging in the re throughout the game." said O'Brien

While the offense was good, it was the defense that was the story. Allowing 31 points to Maryland may not seem all that impressive, however, 14 of those came on run backs (one on a kickoff and one on an interception). The defensive numbers were vastly improved. With linebacker Dwayne Maddux, safety Clem Johnson, and defensive end Michael Lemon leading the way, and with the ever consistent play of Willie Young, the Pack defense only allowed 278 total yards(116 on the ground and 162 through the air) and stifled the Maryland offense down the stretch, not allowing an offensive touchdown in the 2nd half.

The Pack struck the Terps right out of the gate when DE Willie Young picked off the Chris Turner pass on Maryland's own 29 yard line. Wilson wasted no time in hitting George Bryan for the 17 yard touchdown. Maryland struck back almost immediately when RB Davin Meggett capped off a long drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge. Like they have been all ACC season for the Pack, the game was back and forth the entire time, but it seemed as if NC State wanted it more on this day.

At 1-3 in the ACC, Maryland needed this game almost just as much as the Pack did, and almost got back into it at the very end. With State in control 38-31 and driving with 56 seconds on the clock at the Maryland 31, Tom O'Brien faced a tough fourth down decision. Not wanting to risk the blocked field goal return or the botched snap fumble, he decided to go for the 4th and 12, which slipped through Owen Spencer's fingers in the back of the endzone. The decision could have been costly, as Maryland drove down the field. When they finally got into striking distance, the Wolfpack defense stepped up again, and this time it was Michael Lemon who twice got to the quarterback, once leading to a sack and the second time, causing him to throw it away, ending the ballgame.

To Maryland's defense, they did lose their starting quarterback and their main threat on offense, Chris Turner, who left late in the first half with a knee injury. Jamarr Robinson filled in, but was unsuccessful against the aggressive Wolfpack 'D'.
"It was a big change in the game because the difference between the quarterbacks is night and day. It was a whole new style of offense once Robinson came in the game, so everything was seen in there today. We tackled better this week but there is still more to work on before net weeks against Clemson." said NC State coach Tom O'Brien

This team knew that winning was the only option if they wanted to keep their post-season dream alive, and after the final seconds ticked from the clock, the team erupted into celebration, unleashing the pent up emotions that stemmed from a disappointing and embarrassing 4 game losing streak. "After four straight losses, you forget how to celebrate a little bit, but we just jumped around and had a good one!" said Michael Lemon.

When the team got to the locker room, the celebration amplified as they go to watch the final play of the game via a delayed feed on the clubhouse television."There was a lot more energy. There were a lot of happy guys. To come out with the win at the end of the game felt good." added Darrell Davis.

The celebration of their first ACC win of the season will last for the night, but next weeks match-up with Clemson is equally important and will be another huge test for a team looking to reproduce the magic from last year's late season hot streak. For some, like Clem Johnson, every game form here on out will make or break the season. Johnson has one thing on his mind and it's making a bowl. "We are still fighting for a bowl bid, so we're going to keep playing hard."

NC State vs. Maryland Game Notes

Pack Gets On Board Early: The Wolfpack scored its first touchdown just 52 seconds into today’s game on a 17-yard pass from Russell Wilson to George Bryan. That was the earliest offensive score for NC State since the Nov. 5, 2005 game versus Florida State, when the Pack scored just 17 seconds in on a 65-yard run by Andre Brown. Earlier this season versus Murray State, the Pack scored 1:16 into the game.

Bowens Scores First TD in Two Years: When Donald Bowens scored on a 35-yard reception in the first quarter today, it marked his first score since Oct. 27, 2007. Bowens missed the entire 2008 season with a back injury and didn’t return until the third game of the 2009 campaign. For his career, Bowens has six TD catches.

Czajkowski Kicks Career Long: It might not have been good from 49 yards, but Josh Czajkowski’s 48-yard field goal at the 3:57 mark in the first quarter was the longest of the junior’s career. It marked only the second time he attempted a kick over 45 yards (49 yards vs. USC in 2008), and his previous career long was a 43-yarder in the 2009 season opener against South Carolina.

Offensive Line Shuffle: NC State used its fourth different starting lineup of the season on the offensive line. Before today, the Pack had used the same starting combination in the last five games, but had to make two switches today. Redshirt freshman Andrew Wallace started the game at left tackle for Jake Vermiglio, and senior Andy Barbee filled in at right guard R.J. Mattes, who started the first eight games of the season.

Wilson the Touchdown Maker: With his three touchdown passes on the day, Russell Wilson continues to sit in third place in the NCSU record books with his 24 TD passes on the season. Philip Rivers is the only player ahead of Wilson in the NC State record book, as Rivers threw 34 in 2003 and 25 in 2000. As far as touchdown responsibility, Wilson’s 28 combined touchdowns are only behind Rivers’ 37 in 2003 and 30 in 2002 for most in a single season.

Wilson Goes Over 300 Yet Again: For the fourth time this season, Wilson threw for over 300 yards in a game, when he finished with 343 today. Wilson has now gone over 300 yards four times this season, tying Jamie Barnette’s total from 1998 for third-most times in a single season. Only Rivers had more, nine in 2003 and five in 2000.

Williams Goes Over 100 Yards: For the second time in his career, junior wideout Jarvis Williams went over 100 yards in a game. Williams’ 107 receiving yards today was the second-highest total of his career, only behind his 126 in last year’s bowl game against Rutgers.

Defensive Line Interceptions: The NC State defense has registered seven interceptions on the season, but the most surprising stat is four of those have been by defensive lineman. On the first play of the day, senior defensive end Willie Young picked off his second career pass. The Pack has more INTs by its front four players (4) than by its back seven (3).

First Downs: The NC State offense finished with a season-high 31 first downs on the day, the eighth-highest total for a game in NC State history, and the most since the 2003 bowl game against Kansas.

A First Since 2004
: For the first time since the 2004 season, an opponent returned a kickoff for a touchdown against the Wolfpack. Maryland’s Torrey Smith returned a third quarter kickoff 82 yards for the score today.

GAME PREVIEW: NC State vs. Maryland

NC STATE WOLFPACK vs. MARYLAND TERRAPINS

Kickoff: 1pm
Location: Carter-Finley Stadium, Raeligh, NC
Television: ESPN360
Records: NC State (3-5, 0-4 ACC) , Maryland (2-6, 1-3 ACC)

Tom O'Brien and the NC State Wolfpack find themselves in all too familiar territory with four games left to play in the regular season. An injury marred season has the Pack needing to once again call on a late season run to give them post-season hope. Last season, Russell Wilson and company, with their backs against the wall, pulled off four consecutive wins, bringing them to 4-4 in the ACC and made them bowl eligible. This season they're in the same boat at 0-4 and needing a miracle turnaround to keep the season alive, however, it won't be easy.

The Wolfpack will face off against Maryland on Saturday, a team that has been equally as unfortunate in the ACC this season. Sitting at 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the ACC, Ralph Friedgen's squad needs this game just as much as the Wolfpack

Maryland is led by quarterback Chris Turner and WR Torrey Smith. Turner, who ranks amongst the top signal-callers in school history, is averaging 229.1 passing yards per game. He had his fourth career 300 yard passing game vs. Wake Forest and is second in school history in career passing yards. Smith has emerged as one of the top all-around threats in the nation. He is averaging 70.8 receiving yards per game (4th in the ACC) and 192.3 all-purpose ypg (good for third in the country.) **Courtesy of Maryland Media Relations**

To disrupt the Terps offense the NC State defense will need to step up and make plays. This Wolfpack team has allowed 176 points over their recent four game losing streak and this week will be another big time challenge. It's hard to get a read on what the real problem has been for the Pack, other than they've simply lost their swagger. From the secondary to the front line, opposing teams are imposing their will on this defensive unit, and scoring at an alarming rate. The secondary added a new body to the mix last week when the staff pulled the redshirt off of Jarvis Byrd, the heralded freshman CB. Byrd played well in his first action of the season and will look to help stabilize a secondary that has been short of answers this year.

The offense was running on all cylinders last weekend, as Russell Wilson set career highs in passing yards and touchdowns in the loss to FSU and Toney Baker was a monster on the ground, but the increased pressure to score on every possession is sure to wear on the offensive unit at some point.

One key for the Pack is to stay healthy this week. They currently have lost a total of 12 players for the season and can ill afford another if they hope to make a late season push. This past week they lost RJ Mattes who tore his ACL and MCL and TJ Graham who is not done for the year with a stress fracture.

The Wolfpack once again have their back against the wall with their only hope for a post-season birth is to win out. With Russell Wilson at the helm and a healthy Toney Baker, anything is possible, but the success for this team going forward will be in the hands of the defense.

NC State Commit AJ Ferguson: Senior Season Highlights

AJ Ferguson originally committed to NC State back in December of 2008. This 6'2," 250lb DE/TE, accumulated 80 tackles (20 for loss), 10 sacks and 1 interception in his senior season at South Brunswick High School. Ferguson was unable to enroll at NC State this Fall, and is currently at Fork Union Military Academy. He let the NC State coaching staff know that he was still committed to the Wolfpack back in August, when he announced his recommittment. The plan is for Ferguson to enroll at NC State in January of 2010.

Coach O'Brien: ACC Teleconference Before NC State vs. Maryland (11/4/09)

"It was certainly a difficult loss for our football team down in Tallahassee. We've come back this week with a renewed spirit and look forward to get back, and play Maryland this Saturday afternoon, because it seems like forever since we've had a home football game.

On Owen Spencer's yards per catch...

"He has certainly been our deep threat last year through this year. He does a great job getting open deep. He set a record here last year in yards per catch, and I think he is ahead of that record this year. We are going to continue to work hard to get him the ball. He's done a great job of getting open and making some big plays for us."

On the defense...

"We hope we get better. We're going in with the same starting line-up, which hasn't happened yet this season. It's a positive for us. We're still banged up and beat up, but hopefully we'll be able to contain Maryland a little bit. It's always scary when Friedgen has an off-week to prepare. Turner's a three-year starter and has done a great job for them. The've been getting a little better each week and their defense seems to be getting more comfortable with the blitz scheme they are employing. We're going to have to play a great game on Saturday to give us a chance to win."

On the players attitude at being at the bottom of the conference...

"I don't think they've really focused on where the are in the conference. I think they believe they have to win 1 game before you win two. That's what we're trying to do. There is no quit in these kids. They are excited about the game this week. They know they have been dealt a bad hand having 12 players out for the year, but the young kids are excited to play and make the most of it."

Jarvis Byrd: 'Taking Off The Redshirt'

The original plan was to redshirt true freshman Jarvis Byrd. After starter Rashard Smith went down with a knee injury in the Boston College game, the coaching staff had to do some serious thinking about taking the redshirt off of Byrd. He had been playing exceptionally well on the scout team all season long, acting as the opposing teams best defensive back every week. In fact, Byrd was the scout team defensive player of the week before the Murray St. game, after he picked-off the first team offense 4 or 5 times that week.

"Playing on the scout team each week really helped me get better because I was working against guys like Owen Spencer and Jarvis Williams everyday," Byrd said. "During the bye week the coaches went back and watched film from practice and saw how well I was doing against the 1st team.

The coaching staff had a tough decision on their hands, because if they took off Byrd's redshirt, he would have already missed a good portion of the season. Byrd was a top recruit for the Pack, considered to be the best player in NC State's 2009 recruiting class, according to Rivals.com. Some people might consider taking off a redshirt after 7 games as wasting a year of eligibility for the particular player, but Coach O'Brien and his staff were in desperate need of assistance in the secondary.

When Coach Reed called Byrd during the bye-week and asked him if he was ready to play. Byrd knew he was ready to play, but had thoughts about holding on to the redshirt.

"At first I thought about holding on to my redshirt, but then I realized that the experience would really help out next year," Byrd said. "I feel like it was a good thing because I am playing nothing but the top teams left in the ACC."

Byrd was considered one of the hardest hitting defensive backs in his recruiting class, and his aggressive style showed up on the field this past Saturday in Tallahassee. In the 14 snaps that Byrd played, he recorded 4 solo tackles, looking extremely confident in his collegiate debut.

It was fitting that Byrd made his debut against Florida State, the team that he grew up idolizing. This past Saturday was also the first time that the true freshman had been back to his home state since coming to Raleigh earlier this year.

"I grew up a FSU fan, so I was real energized to step into that stadium for the first time," Byrd said. "It was homecoming for FSU and it was kind of like a homecoming for me too, because I haven't been home since I came to Raleigh. Getting to play my first game with my mom and dad in the stands was really special."

Recap of Coach O'Brien's Radio Show (11/2/09)

-Coach O'Brien emphasized that Dwayne Maddox and Jarvis Byrd did a good job helping fill in for Ray Michel and Rashard Smith. Maddox adjusted well, considering the fact that playing middle linebacker is much different than outside. Byrd did a great job in his first game.

-Coach thought that this was Clem Johnson's best game by far.

-O'Brien also believed that this was Russell Wilson's best game he had played to date, considering the quality of the opponent and the fact that the game was on the road in Tallahassee. He thought that Wilson was on the money for the most part, and that the offensive line did a pretty good job of protecting him.

-R.J. Mattes will not be returning after injuring his knee in the first quarter, and he will also miss all of Spring practice as well. O'Brien felt that Andy Barbee did a good job at filling in for him.

-Toney Baker was running "like a man possessed."

-O'Brien said that it is tough when players are young because they are thinking too much. "When you're thinking...you're stinking." The more experienced you are, the more confident you play. The more confident you are, the faster you play.

-He said that the defensive line wasn't getting man-handled, but they do need to get better rushes from the front four. They weren't able to blitz that much on Ponder, because he had only thrown 1 interception all season coming into the game. Fortunately, the defense was able to pick him off twice.

-O'Brien conceded that he should have called a timeout at the end of the 1st half, to help conserve the clock, so that they would have had a better chance to score.

-Jimbo Fisher attacked the young players as expected. The defense needs to do a better job on 3rd down, because FSU was 8 of 12 on 3rd down conversions.

-He doesn't attribute the Wolfpack's injuries to the strength and conditioning program. Only one of the injuries could even be pointed in the direction of strength and conditioning, and that was a pulled groin. All of the injuries have been freak accidents.

-Nate Irving's rehab is going well. He was cleared to start jogging in the pool a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully he will be cleared to jog on a treadmill soon. Nate told him that he is going to burn the treadmill up when he gets the chance.

NC State vs. FSU Game Notes

Russell Wilson had a career-high five touchdown throws, tying the school record set three times byPhilip Rivers and once by Terry Harvey. The last time a Wolfpack QB had that many TD throws was 2003 in the Tangerine Bowl against Kansas when Rivers had five in his final game. Wilson's previous high was four (Gardner-Webb, Murray St. and Pitt, all this season).

Wilson also threw for a career-high 349 yards, the second-most ever against the Noles for an NCState QB. It eclipsed his previous high of 345 against Gardner-Webb earlier this year.

Owen Spencer had a career-high 159 yards, his third 100-yard receiving game, tied for 10th in school history. The 159 yards was the second-most ever against FSU, with only Torry Holt having more in 1997. It was the most receiving yards by a Pack player since Donald Bowens had 202 against Virginia in 2007.

Toney Baker had his second career 100-yard rushing day – and the first since 2006 (174 against Clemson). He finished with 112 yards on 19 carries. It was the first 100-yard rushing game for an NC State player since Andre Brown had 101 against South Carolina to start the 2008 season.

Jarvis Williams caught three touchdowns, the first time in his career he had a multiple touchdown day. That was the Wolfpack's first three touchdown receiving day since Tramain Hall had three against Duke in 2003. Overall Williams has 11 career touchdown catches, tied for 10th in school history.

Russell Wilson connected with Owen Spencer for an 80-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter, a career-long for both players. The pass play tied for the 11th longest in school history and was the longest aerial connection since 2005 for the Wolfpack. Coming into this week, that play also tied for the third longest pass of the season in the ACC.

The 538 yards of total offense were the most since the 2004 UNC game, when NC State had 577 yards (NC State lost that game 30-24).

Jamelle Eugene scored his first touchdown of finished the game with 41 yards on 10 carries. George Bryan scored on a season-long 29-yard reception in the fourth quarter to cut the FSU lead to 38-35.

NC State started a new combination in the secondary for the seventh time in the first eight games. C.J. Wilson and DeAndre Morgan started at cornerback and Clem Johnson and Brandan Bishop started at safety.

True freshman Jarvis Byrd played in his first game for the Wolfpack, the seventh true freshman and the 32nd new player to see their first game action.

NC State scored 21 points at the half, the second-most ever scored against the Seminoles. The Wolfpack scored 24 in 2001, a 34-28 Wolfpack win at Florida State.

The 42 points scored against FSU was the second-most in the series for the Wolfpack. The top four Wolfpack scoring games against the Seminoles have all happened in Tallahassee, and three of the four have been losses.
