ACC Officials Say That Spiller Fumbled

NC State head football coach Tom O'Brien has been informed by Doug Rhoads, head of ACC football officials, that the play that the Wolfpack coaching staff challenged in the third quarter of last Saturday's game versus Clemson was a fumble and should have been overturned, giving NC State the football. The score was 24-14 Clemson at the time of the play.

Don't you love it when they do this? I know they make the best call they can in the moment, but honestly, they should never have to come out and say they were wrong. Especially on such a game deciding play. Call me crazy for thinking we had a shot at that point, but if that play goes the way it should have, we could still be playing for a bowl.

Lota good that does us now...

The same thing happened against USC with an obviously blown call and TOB said the ACC rep called him to inform him of the mistake. TOBs response,"Great now what does that do for me today??? NOTHING!!!"

The bad thing is TOB called a timeout to let the officals upstairs look at it before a new play and the STILL couldnt get it right. Why not just let the booth review it?? Worst thing that can happen is an extra TV Timeout and 5 min longer game... but GET THE CALL RIGHT...

I swear Swofford cant stop screwing us....

absolutely rediculous. how do u mess up something so obvious. getting calls right is the officials job. how many people could mess up so bad at their job with no reprecussions. what a load of bs

A lot of good this does us now.

The bigger question is, why WASN'T it overturned? They reviewed it. What do they see NOW that they didn't see on Saturday? They showed the replay on the video board and the whole stadium knew that was a fumble. I'm telling you, there's a conspiracy against NC State.

This burns me up. We get that ball and we potentially cut the lead to 3. As it stands, they pushed the lead to a nearly insurmountable number.

The screwed up thing is that every play is supposedly reviewed so there should not have been such a lengthly delay and our coach having to burn a timeout before Clemson's next play. To have 3-4 minutes to review that play plus Spiller's body language indicating he thought it was a fumble and still screw up the right call blows my mind. Are the replay officials using a 8 inch black and white monitor for their reviews?

I know its not TOBs style but I personally would LOVE to see him take the fine from the ACC and just light up the officials in a press confrence.

How come the officials are the only ones who arnt held accountable for their mistakes???

And how are football refs getting so bad??? SEC, ACC, PAC10... all the major confrences are having trouble with bad officiating...

I certainly don't think it is a conspiracy, but I do wonder if there was actually someone in the booth reviewing the play. There is no way you miss that call. Maybe the replay official had to run to the restroom or something. Maybe they looked at the wrong play. All I know is, you can't miss that one.

I'm remembering it being longer then 3-4 minutes. Terrible call-worst I've ever seen in person.

Their is honestly no excuse!!! Something has to be done, this must not go unpunished and must have repercussions. I think the official must have some kind of punishment individually. Honestly I am tired of hearing people say well it most likely wouldnt have changed the out come of the game. First off you dont know that and second off the point of replay is to correct incorrect calls bottom line. Man its just one of those years no breaks or good luck. I hate to pile on but dont forget about the missed fask mask call in the last 5 minutes of the USC game (which might have stopped the go ahead TD). WOW those two calls both go against us. Anyway at least we got an apology. HAHA, what a f-ing Joke. GO PACK. Lets win the last 2 and if you lose one make sure its this week.

Don't forget the officials also started the clock at the end of the first half of the Pitt game when the clock should have been stopped. The review system was down or something, and they said they were unable to review that. By the time they stoped the clock, there was only 5 seconds left and we had to kick the FG instead of taking a shot or two at the end zone. The officials apologized for that one, too. (At least we won that game anyway!)

As for doing something about this, I saw someone posted a comment on a WRAL blog stating that the booth official that did not overturn the call had been fired.

Of course, this is unofficial. But that's what they said.

Actually, speaking of the Pitt game and officiating clock mgmt, i was watching our game with Maryland two weeks ago and they did the same thing. We ran a play get tackled etc. clock is running. Then we throw and incomplete pass, clock stops. Then we line up for the next play, and get an offsides or some penalty and the clock starts running and KEEPS running. It's a deadball foul off an incomplete pass before. I don't know who runs the clock, but its usually some dude whose done it since clocks were invented. But the officials never stopped the clock, and of course didn't add time back. Ive started to notice that stuff and i bet it happens all the time. We only notice it in the last few minutes of a half or the game which is understandable.

But that clempson call was horrid, inexplicable that they cant overturn that and that UNC fwd lateral was just as bad. What about the TD for FSU off the shoe string INT against UNC that was also not overturned.
