Coach O'Brien Press Conference After Clemson

Key Quotes

"I think the question was asked this past Saturday if we were going to start playing for next year, and certainly we're not, we still have two games left this year. And the biggest one is this week versus Virginia Tech. We're going to try to be a much better football team and get out on the practice field this week and see if we can make some improvements."

"I think most of the seniors are playing really hard. It's their last year and you would expect that. We just don't have enough of them. Cash and Burgess probably played their best games of the year this past Saturday. A lot of guys are still competing and playing hard, and some guys are trying to do too much, and that's part of the problem."

"Right now Lemon and McKeen are probably even, and they will probably split time evenly from here on out."

"I think Ray Michel is still not 100%. He's giving us everything he can, but he had a 4-6 week injury and it's only been 4 weeks."

"We were too aggressive. We overran things. We didn't stay behind the football the way we should have. We got too aggressive."

"Certainly, if Jarvis Byrd hits you, your gonna go down, and thus far, knock on wood, that's a good thing."

"I think the quarterback (Wilson) is very confident when he throws him (Williams) the ball. I think that's a big plus. I think he's learned to use his size and power to his advantage. He's a big target and tough to get a handle on, especially if the ball gets up high."

"George is probably skilled more as an offensive player, but with all of the issues we had in the secondary, we tried to play him there, but he wasn't as good there as he is at wide receiver."

"I don't think Donald is back to full-speed. He's been slowed down by the knee. I don't know if he ever really got in shape. He's fighting through it and giving us the best he can, but he certainly doesn't look like he did during our first year here."

"I think Audie is still learning. Linebacker is not a natural position for him. He's a guy that has to see some things, but once he see's them, he gets it. He's a great effort guy. I think in time he will end up being a really good player for us."

Just to let everyone know scout has put Freshad Hunter back as a commit. I guess as of right now nothing major has happened since then and hopefully he will be on campus come next fall.

That's is good news about Hunter, the local DE out of Cary. He seems to really want to get in to the program that TOB has laid the foundation for and excel at the next level.

Besides we will probably need insurance depth at DE with Wille and Shane both moving on. TOB has certainly showed the willingness to bring a true freshman into the fray, ie DT Sway or RB Washington, to provide depth if those players appear to give us the best chance to win.

I do like the positive words about Byrd- though in the 2nd half, I believe after we lost the challenge of the fumble, Byrd came off the corner and tried to lay the wood on a RB (Spiller maybe) and forgot to wrap up. THe result was not good as the RB escaped and either went in for a long rushing TD or set them up on the door step.

My patience with the yougen's is better then most but it's wearing very thin.

Maddux is an anomaly to me. He's there playing in the systwm and doing such fine work one week, then a mess at times other. Losing Nate was so huge and no one doubts it impacted our season outlook from the get go. But I really thought that Maddux could provide a consistently level that would soften the blow a little.

I have a feeling he is going to be fighting hard for playing time in the Spring and I hoping that he can finish this season off on a high note. It's crucial in turning around this program that we get upper echelon play form our LB's-starting this Spring.

Speaking of LB's, I don't follow recruiting much anymore- butt could the Moore kid from SE Raleigh be re considering the ND commit since it's going to be Weiss packing boxes soon? That LB is a stud.
