Recap of Coach O'Brien's Radio Show (11/2/09)

-Coach O'Brien emphasized that Dwayne Maddox and Jarvis Byrd did a good job helping fill in for Ray Michel and Rashard Smith. Maddox adjusted well, considering the fact that playing middle linebacker is much different than outside. Byrd did a great job in his first game.

-Coach thought that this was Clem Johnson's best game by far.

-O'Brien also believed that this was Russell Wilson's best game he had played to date, considering the quality of the opponent and the fact that the game was on the road in Tallahassee. He thought that Wilson was on the money for the most part, and that the offensive line did a pretty good job of protecting him.

-R.J. Mattes will not be returning after injuring his knee in the first quarter, and he will also miss all of Spring practice as well. O'Brien felt that Andy Barbee did a good job at filling in for him.

-Toney Baker was running "like a man possessed."

-O'Brien said that it is tough when players are young because they are thinking too much. "When you're thinking...you're stinking." The more experienced you are, the more confident you play. The more confident you are, the faster you play.

-He said that the defensive line wasn't getting man-handled, but they do need to get better rushes from the front four. They weren't able to blitz that much on Ponder, because he had only thrown 1 interception all season coming into the game. Fortunately, the defense was able to pick him off twice.

-O'Brien conceded that he should have called a timeout at the end of the 1st half, to help conserve the clock, so that they would have had a better chance to score.

-Jimbo Fisher attacked the young players as expected. The defense needs to do a better job on 3rd down, because FSU was 8 of 12 on 3rd down conversions.

-He doesn't attribute the Wolfpack's injuries to the strength and conditioning program. Only one of the injuries could even be pointed in the direction of strength and conditioning, and that was a pulled groin. All of the injuries have been freak accidents.

-Nate Irving's rehab is going well. He was cleared to start jogging in the pool a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully he will be cleared to jog on a treadmill soon. Nate told him that he is going to burn the treadmill up when he gets the chance.

Haha, I like Nate's attitude, I just hope he get better soon and doesn't hurt himself again. It will be good to have him back next year. I heard something about him getting redshirted this year, but I thought you could only be redshirted your freshman year. What are the rules on that?

You can redshirt any of your eligible years prior to playing your fourth. Nate has already redshirted though. I too am looking forward to having him back. I think our defense, despite losing the entire starting DL, has the potential to be much improved next year. The back 7 loses only Michel and Johnson. I think Maddox or Lucas will fill in nicely for Michel with more experience and another offseason to grow into the role. We'll miss Clem Johnson, but I think the guys we have coming back can be solid after all the experience they are getting this year. Our DB 2-deep will no longer be littered with freshmen an the guys that are there have the skills to succeed. Our LBs will be much more experienced as a unit. I like where we're headed.

    word verification - michel

He must be coming back this week.

Not to be too much of a debbie downer but I saw this video on a site and it really makes me want to cut players who tackle like this. Its just the lack of effort that makes me mad. This particular clip is one the final scoring driving for FSU @ about the 45 yardline, watch Byers #28 just watch the reciever run by him, within arms length!!! Im not sure he would see the feild next week if I called the shots...

Nate could apply for a sixth season, like Toney Baker will do, from the NCAA after he completes next season if he wants. While it would be nice to have him back for two more years, I hope that he is so good next year that the Pros will come calling (if they don't this year).

I agree Alum02, we are definately headed in a great direction. Great points about where we stand next year with Nate coming back, more experience in secondary, and only losing 2 from the back 7. I was really hoping this year would be our break out year and it was tough to see us slide so far. The write up points out that most of our injuries are "freak" injuries that aren't necessarily tied to strength and conditioning, makes me kind of feel better about what happened this year. I'm really hoping that it WAS just a string of 2 unfortunate years with injuries, just bad luck.

I posted this earlier but it never made it through screening I guess so I will repost.

Here is a link of a video clip from last saturdays game. Its the first play of the FSU's game winning drive, just watch # 28 Byers not even stick a finger out to tackle the RB and he gains an EXTRA 8 yards on the play. If I was TOB and I saw this Id sit that young man down til next season... Until he "Gets It"

Please tell me if Im the only one who wants to throw my chair after watching this....

I don't know what to say Pack Leader. I couldn't get the video to work, but I'll take your word for it. I don't know whats going on with the D but its just terrible to watch when an rb on the other team breaks like five "tackles" and gets the first down every time.
