Coach Tom O'Brien: ACC Teleconference (9/23/09)

Key Quotes

"(The offensive line) could be a concern...we are starting our fourth different line the fourth game of the year."

"They put a lot of pressure on the quarterback. We have a lot of work to do to keep Russell free."

"This (game against Pitt) will be a great test to see who and what we are.."

"The problem (with 5'8 Pitt runningback, Dion Lewis) is that you have to find him. They play with a bunch of 6'4, 6'5, 6'6 offensive linemen. (They are) Big, powerful guys that get up in your face and knock you back. What he does a good job of is picking his seams and he kind of squirts through before you can find wehre he is, and he's had the ability to run away from people...he's got some power too, he's not just quick and fast."

"We hope (that we are ready for this Pitt football team). It's a big, physical football team. They play smash-mouth football, they come at you with a 5'8 tailback and 6'2 260lbs fullback in front of him blocking."

"When we lost Rashard Smith we were very fortunate that (DeAndre Morgan) finally been able to get a weekend of practice in and get back on the field. He gave us an experience factor that we really don't have in the secondary."

Does anyone know if the WPH/WPP guys have full time jobs or is this site their full time job? Just curious. It just amazes me how much these sites are updated on a daily basis.

Oh, it's about to get physical up in here.

I really hope we can hang in there, physically. Our Linebackers and D-Line should be up to the task. I worry about getting enough pressure on their QB to assist our DB's.

They (Pitt) haven't been playing world-beaters up to this point, so we will be a good test for them, too.

I don't know who will win this game, but one thing makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Pitt gave up over 400 passing yards in their last road game. At Buffalo.

If we don't have a better passing game than BUFFALO, I may just have to sell the rest of my season tickets!

I just hope we turn Wilson loose this time. Let him run when he thinks he should. I think our coaches have gotten into his head a little too much and he's still thinking too much out there. Just let him play and we'll be fine I think!

    TruthBknown,
I think in game one Russell was just shaking the cobwebs off. I asked Coach O'Brien whether he thought Wilson was playing timid and he answered that he wasn't sure what the media was watching, but Russell made all the proper reads. I also asked Russell the same question and he said he wasn't thinking about that. Now, I know the player and the coach wouldn't come out and say that Russell was playing timid, but I think he was just trying to not make mistakes instead of making plays. That's just my opinion. The past two games he's looked very instinctual and has started to let loose.

You're right about that. Russell has been more "Russelly" in the last two games. But I still believe he was different in that first game. I wouldn't call it timid. (I'd actually call it brave.) He stood in the backfield for as long as humanly possible. By the time he decided he HAD to run, he already had guys breathing down his neck and couldn't really get away. The time to run would be a little sooner, when there's an opening there and they're not expecting him to take off.

I hope RW continues the same style of play as in the last two games.

You may be right about it being cobwebs, too. But it seemed like he was heck-bent on NOT running the ball. He looked like he was trying to be a pure pocket passer, and that nullifies the advantage he gave us as a dual-threat QB.
