The loss was the Pack's first to Duke in 12 meetings, and was the second consecutive ACC loss for O'Briens squad. Again it was the line-backers and the secondary that struggled mightily with the strong arm and soft touch of Thaddeus Lewis. The NC State defensive line, while able to stop the run (30 carries for 50 yards) was not able to get enough pressure on the Duke quarterback to disrupt his rhythm...and Lewis was grooving. His 50 passing attempts was a new school record, and his 5 touchdowns was a new career high (and ties a school record).
The Wolfpack defense needs to sure up their secondary, and needs to do so fast. Wake Forest and now Duke has exploited their achilles heel and there will certainly be more to come. Over their first two ACC games the Pack has allowed 823 yards through the air and 8 touchdowns, two numbers that are going to drive O'Brien and his staff crazy.
The first half was a old west style shootout with both offenses clicking on all cylinders and combining for 42 points. While Lewis had already accumulated 233 yards and a touchdown, Russell Wilson was hot on his tail with 151 and a touchdown. The second half, however, was an entirely different story.
While the NC State defense continued to be picked apart by Lewis, the Duke defense started to roll. They began containing Wilson and shutting down all aspects of the NC State offense. In the second half, Wilson was held to a miniscule 21 yards through the air and NC State was not allowed an offensive touchdown.
The questions about the Pack secondary will continued to be asked, yet there appears to be no apparent answer, something that Coach O'Brien and his staff will need to address this week in practice.
"You've got to give them a lot of credit. They came in here and got it done offensively. We certainly had troubles stopping the passing game that is something that we obviously need to get fixed or every team that's going to play against us, we're going to see 50 passes a game. We have to work hard on that and see where we go from here." O'Brien said.
Where the Wolfpack is going next is on the road to Boston College where they'll face a Eagles team that is 2-2 in conference play. The Wolfpack will need to find some answers in the secondary and sure up a shaky linebacker corps that had trouble stopping dump passes in the flats if they want to turn things around, something O'Brien is definitely counting on.
"We're halfway through the season. We still have a lot to play for and I don't think these kids have a lot of quit in them, so we just have to circle the wagons and see what we can get done this week heading into Boston." he said.

7 Responses to "Blue Devils Punish Pack 49-28"I hope TOB can concentrate on game prep this week and not going back to his old stomping grounds and seeing one of his former guys fighting a battle with cancer. I really can't figure out why our back seven is so bad in coverage. Zone defenses can work. Our doesn't. Lets go back to the drawing board and find our best two man cover corners and roll the dice. Whatever we're doing isn't working.
As much as I hate to say this... but this team just made me de-commit from a road trip. We will not pay the grand to support team in Boston because they do not deserve it. Good luck the rest of year guys...but you humiliated yourself today. No ifs, ands or buts...just got destroyed by Duke. I go to every home game and just about every road game to help build the type of support we need as a program...but sometimes I wonder. I'll stop before I hurt our players and coaches feelings. You are NOT getting it done.
This game is right up there in being one of the most disappointing games i've ever seen in person. I don't see how we can honestly compete for an ACC title when our defensive unit puts out a performance like that. . . 500 yds and 5TDs in the air.
up until this year our defense never lost us games but this is what has been happening the last two games.I've got much much more ranting but I'm going to stop.
HUGE disappointment today boys.
Go Pack.
NCStateGlory, this team as far far away from an ACC championship than they have ever been. Duke may be a bit improved but that was pathetic.
TOB had better get things under control. YOu just DONT get blown out by Duke in Football.......period!
Well at least the rest of our scheduled opponents know they can line up four wide and have a turkey shoot against our secondary. Our front four might be good but if they can't get pressure and our opponents don't run the ball then Cardinal Gibbons D might as well be out there. In addition our defense seems slow and diffident. Is this coaching or skill issues? It's also obvious that when we play catch up, teams zero in on Russell and shut him down. We turn into a 1 dimensional team that has to rely on RW to do everything. P Riv couldn't even handle that load.
I'm frustrated and I can't sleep. We got man handled by Duke today. I don't want any heads to roll, which seems to be the consensus at some sites but I do want answers. I'm not off the TOB wagon and I desperately want to keep believing State is headed in the right direction. But something has to change. What are his plans next week? More changes in personnel? Do we try new schemes? Shoot lets try rushing 2 and dropping everyone else back. Our defensive guys are hesitant and persistently out of position. I want to be reassured that we will be at the very least competitive against the other ACC squads on our schedule. If TJ Yates torches us for this kind of burn, then I'm going to shrivel up and bury myself in a very deep hole. I can't bear the thought of enduring another loss of this magnitude. I've never been this concerned after a State loss. Sorry about the length I've been burning on this for a while now. I'm usually pretty quiet on these boards.
Chad I see what your saying but I mean isn't the goal is to compete and win Conference titles? I wasn't saying that we were title contenders I was just pointing out the obvious fact that with that defensive effort we are leaps and bounds away.
Matt yes we lost today and yes it was to Duke. . . but its far from armageddon which might be hard to believe. We just need to believe in our coaching staff and just continue to make changes. No body in the secondary is safe from being on the bench which I HOPE leads to people stepping up!!
Go Pack.
I dont get what our coaches are thnking at all. our zone defenses dont work and we dont even attempt to play man defense. But what bothers me the most is that we just continue to do the same stuff. Why not send 6,7, or even 8 guys after the qb? PLEASE BLITZ!!!! we have no chance in coverage no matter how many db's you put on the field. its just a waste. send them afterthe qb and at least make him hurry into a bad throw or something. I dont know who has been coaching the db's but its pretty clear he's been doing a piss poor job. and if I see TJ Graham give up on another pass and stop in his route and watch a pass nearly picked off i am going to lose my mind. You want to know why we suck right now? Its attitudes like that. People who give up will never win and its that simple.
