"We certainly made same changes after the game on Saturday (Wake Forest). I think the Freshmen were overwhelmed a little bit by the scope of the game," O'Brien said. "Even though they are very athletic and probably good prospects down the road, we need to settle down and go with more experience this week. We're playing against the #1 pass defense in the conference. We've made some blows back there the past couple weeks that we just can't afford. Until someone steps up and grabs the job, I guess we'll keep working until we find the right combination."
Both Earl Wolff and Brandan Bishop showed tremendous potential in the first 4 games. Wolff was all over the field making 7 tackles against South Carolina, which earned him the starting job for the next four games. Bishop made some huge plays with Pitt in the red zone, making a tackle for loss and a pass breakup in the Wolfpack's final defensive series that sealed the victory. With all of this being said, both of these young men were seemingly no where to be found in the Wake Forest game.
Senior captain Willie Young hopes to help the young secondary carry the burden. He acknowledges their youth, but also their talent and potential. Young believes that it is his responsibility to help encourage them and help them obtain their full potential.
"We've got a lot of young guys in the secondary," Young said. "It's obvious now we are going to be attacked more often there now. I've just got to do a better job encouraging those guys. I've got to tell them to keep pushing on. You've got to forget about the last play. You can't dwell upon the last play. Not in the game of football. You won't be successful at all if you dwell upon the past."
Coach O'Brien has completely shaken up the secondary in this weeks depth chart. Experience seems to be the recipe that O'Brien is going with against Duke. Seniors Clem Johnson and Bobby Floyd will be starting at both Safety positions. O'Brien had high words of praise for Senior Bobby Floyd at Monday's press conference.
"He's a leader on the football team. He always has been. He has a tremendous amount of respect from everyone on the football team. He's really a tough kid. He hits as hard as anybody. He's a Navy kind of football player. He just loves football. He doesn't care if he has a helmet or not, he's going to go out and play the game. That's the kind of players we want."
Redshirt Sophomore Justin Byers has been moved from Safety to Corner, which is the position he was recruited to play in the first place.
"He came in as a Corner and that's what he was recruited to be," O'Brien said. "Our problem last year was at Safety and we had to play him there. This past weekend he played better for us at the Boundary Corner position than he did at Safety."
The Free Corner position was left wide open in the depth chart this week. Redshirt Freshman C.J. Wilson and Redshirt Junior DeAndre Morgan will battle all week long for the starting spot.
The secondary will face a big challenge this week in the Duke passing attack, which ranks 1st in the ACC and 14th nationally. This weekend is a chance for the veterans in the secondary to step up and show their worth against a formidable foe.

10 Responses to "Wolfpack Secondary Looking For the Right Formula"Bobby Floyd is the man. "He hits as hard s anybody." Yeah, he does. The term 'slobber-knocker' comes to mind.
"He doesn't care if he has a helmet or not,..." I think they require them now, but I have no doubt that Bobby would pursue the ball helmet-less, if need be.
I hope that everybody on the defense got an extra drill (or 100) involving wrapping up on a tackle. That last first down at Wake was atrocious. TOB had everything called out perfecty, in order to give TJ and/or Russell to get another shot at winning that game. Three BLOWN tackles later, and we all have to helplessly watch the remaining time tick off of the clock.
Wrap it up, B!
This artical makes it sound like the freshman we the problem at Wake. That was not the case. Wolf did not play his best game but the "new Starters" were the ones beat in coverage over and over. Bishop did not have a bad game.
Frankly he did not play nearly as much as the other safeties. He was not beat in coverage and did not miss tackles. We can contine to throw him under the bes but the facts don't support this. watch the film again.
I think we will do better this week. Not because we changed things up. This is BS but because Duke is not as good at wake period. I think we will continue to play all the safeties.
This notion that the Freshman are the problem is just fantasy. watch the game. Go back and watch the tackeling at the end and name the players who missed the tackles.
The article was not meant to blame the Freshmen. Byers replaced George and there is the chance that Wilson beats out Morgan. With that being sais, we wrote the article with Coach O'Briens words in mind. The article highlights the talent and potential of the young guys, as do O'Briens words, but he emphasized going with experience. Not meant to be a crack on the Freshmen. Just an analysis of how O'Brien is shaking up the starting lineup in the secondary this week.
I don't think anyone is throwing BB "under the bus".
O'brien is starting seniors over freshman this game (at leat at safety). That's a fact.
There will be a healthy rotation of all of these guys (provided they did what they were supposed to during the week).
That was a pretty defensive post, Anony. I don't think anyone is throwing the newbies under the bus. I think we all know who missed those last three tackles. And, all three should know better, regardless of there class ranking.
I'm sure that there are a lot more things that go into TOB making these decisions than a handful of plays during a game, that any fan can point towards. I'm sure that everyone here loves and respects the newer guys just as much as the veterans. The new guys are our future. But, they need experience in order to provide stability in the secondary and on the corners. But I think that TOB has already proven that he will start whoever deserves to start. That's where we have to trust TOB and Co. to try to work this out.
Go Pack!
i know this is the football board but theWolfpacker has a premium article up saying that Luke Cothron (2010 basketball recruit) has named a leader....can you guys comment on that?
