Rivers Inks Lucrative 6-Year Deal

If you bought yourself or your children a Philip Rivers San Diego Chargers jersey, and were worried that he might change teams, you can rest your mind now. Rivers and the Chargers have just agreed to a 6-year contract that is worth $92 million, with $38-39 million guaranteed, that will keep him in San Diego at least through 2015. Philip had a monster season last year, establishing himself as one of the NFL's elite Quarterbacks. He led the league in Quarterback Rating (105.5), Touchdown passes (34) and ranked 4th in Passing Yards (4,009). This is tremendous for Rivers and the Chargers.

Chargers President Dean Spanos had this to say to The Sports Network concerning the signing of Rivers:

"This is a good day for the Chargers and Chargers fans," said team president Dean Spanos. "Philip has proven he has all of the necessary qualities to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. He's a proven winner and an unquestioned leader for this football team."

Antonio Gates was also excited for Rivers. Gates, who has been Rivers' primary target ever since he took the reins, spoke with ESPN and had this to say about his Quarterback:

"He's a good dude, man, and I'm happy for him and I'm happy that he's here long term. At the end of the day I know what it means for him to go out here and play football and know the passion he has for us to win," Gates said. "I think that's the biggest thing about him. The thing I'm going to remember when I'm done playing ain't going to be the big contracts, it ain't going to be the money, it ain't going to be the cars. It's going to be the person I had the chance to sit next to."

If your wondering if the money is going to get to Rivers' head, don't expect him to go out and purchase a Hummer anytime soon. Rivers told the Miami Herald that he would stick with his minivan.

"It's the most efficient for the kids," he said. "They can get in an out. It's hard to buckle them in the car seats if you've got to climb back there in all the SUVs."

Congrats Phil. Noone is more deserving. It has been and is a pleasure watching you play. I've seen a number of Pack fans already asking when you are going to "give back" to the Wolfpack so let me be the first to say... Thanks for all you've already given and for the way you continue to represent my university. Take care of yourself and your family. God bless.

Oh, he's worth the money! Now he just needs to get some credit! How do you have the best QB numbers in the league and get snubbed for the Pro Bowl? That is a rhetorical question by the way. No need to answer. The Chargers have pulled off some great wins since Philip took the reigns. They have also had some tough stretches. Injuries have come at terrible times. The stars have to line up for a football team to be healthy and clicking at playoff time. It will happen. Rivers will be your Super Bowl MVP before it is all said and done. Over LT, over Gates, over Merrimen, etc. He's too good, and is too good at making his teammates better, not to accomplish this. So, write it down.
Congrats Philip! You will always hold a special place in the hearts of Wolfpack Fans! I still watch clips of your days in Raleigh and wax nostalgic! Thanks for everything. Go Pack!

I've struggled with that one, PL. I have heard so many things regarding that situation. All I know is that there are plenty of "high profile" alum that make it back to Raleigh every year for various reasons, but Philip isn't one of them. I know that he and Chuck are tight. I don't know if he even knows TOB. I know that there isn't a Pack Fan that I've ever met, that doesn't hold Rivers up on a pedestal, and rightfully so. My hopes are that Philip is just busy with his wife and FOUR kids, and chasing a Super Bowl Ring! P. Riv. is a hard worker, and we all know that he puts maximum effort into whatever he is doing, so there is some hope that he isn't blaming us for whatever went down between Amato and the "Powers that Be."

    I agree PPack!

Heres a good article by the N&O about how Rivers should have an award, or honor, or some type of recignition.
