Every week the Sporting News throws tough questions concerning college football at Dave Curtis and Matt Hayes. One of the questions that they were asked this week was:
"Q: Which BCS team needs to have the most go right in August?
Hayes: N.C. State. This is a team on the cusp of a big season. The Wolfpack won four of its last five games in 2008, and if star quarterback Russell Wilson hadn't missed the second half of the bowl loss to Rutgers, it would've been five straight.
The ACC Atlantic couldn't be more wide open, and the 'Pack got a boost—call it mojo, karma, whatever—when one-time star tailback Toney Baker looked fresh the first day of fall camp. He's not the team's best tailback anymore, but Baker holds considerable clout with teammates—despite playing just one game in coach Tom O'Brien's first two seasons in Raleigh because of a knee injury.
O'Brien must find a comfortable rotation (that won't impact team chemistry) with Wilson and freshman Mike Glennon, who looked terrific in the spring and will get specific playing time each game. Glennon will play because he deserves it, and because O'Brien knows Wilson—who played professional baseball this summer—likely will be a top 20 pick in the 2010 amateur baseball draft.
In other words, this could be Wilson's last season; why not get Glennon ready for 2010 if he can help you win this fall, too?"

5 Responses to "Sporting News: Pack Needs A Quick Start"Hey, they're right! you go 'Sporting News!' Thanks for telling the rest of the country about our situation. Though, I think it will be crucial to have a good October and November, too.
BTW - Word verification definition: 'sakenda' - Sam Jones (also see: Robert Crisp).
Wilson a "Top 20" pick? Are they talking top 20 overall or top 20 rounds? I never thought of him as a Top 20 overall kind of guy.
Alum02 - I haven't seen any of the projections that they are using either. But, he could go in a later round (other than the first) and get paid.
its WAY too hard to make it in baseball. especially when you are just a "good" player and a mediocre team. he is the best QB in a top 1-2 football conference in the country. he has the ability to make millions in the nfl. i only see him getting a signing bonus w/ baseball and not making it out of the farm leagues.
i know nfl scouts will crack on his height, but i see him as a drew brees type QB with a TON of mobility. he has a good enough arm to make it in the nfl. not only that but his nfl IQ is off the charts.
i sure hope he stays past this year and take the extra year to see his possible standing in the nfl draft
If Wilson suits up for the Pack next year it will be a mistake. His future is in baseball. He's a wonderful ACC QB but his game does not fit with NFL style.
I can't wait for Wolfpack football!!! 4 weeks from today!!!
