Donald Bowens Rehab Update

This off-season, Wolfpack star wideout, Donald Bowens suffered a serious knee injury while playing basketball. The diagnosis was that Bowens "possibly" could miss the entire 2009 season, however, more recent reports have him on schedule for a mid to late-season return. Usually tight-lipped about injuries and rehab, Coach O'Brien surprised all in attendance when he had Donald on hand at practice doing drills in front of tons of cameras and reporters.

While obviously nowhere near 100%, Bowens looked better than we expected as he was sprinting, changing directions and even being jammed off the line in a series of rehab drills. We still have no real time-table for his return, but by the looks of it, the reports of a mid-season return do not look far fetched at all.

That being said, you don't have to take our word for it. You can see for yourself here, as we scooped some footage of Donald Bowens participating in a few drills at the opening practice... enjoy!

I still remember him catching the "Hail Mary" from Daniel Evans at the end of the Boston College Game. Hell of a play!! I would love to see him get healthy and back to old form.

For knee surgery, he looks pretty good. I's honestly speculate he could be back earlier. But you never want to take a chance with a young mans future before there is 100% certainty. I would trust TOB on this one. I think Bowens could be a potential late round (5th +) draft pick based on what he did in 07.

I don't think they'll rush him back also because we have a good group of young and talented receivers as is.

I just get the feeling that 2010 is going to be a VERY special year. I mean, we are going to have one of the best receiving corps, one of the best QB's, one of the best running back corps, one hell of an O-line, one of the best TE tandems, a fantastic LB corp, and the D-line looks incredibly solid. The only thing that we have to worry about are corners and safeties along with the kicking game. Those things can evolve throughout this season, and with RS-Freshmen (from this year) on the 'two deep' next year, along with the guys that we have getting some experience, those positions could take care of themselves (with a little help from TOB and Co.)!
My feelings are, that whatever we accomplish this year will be the big lead-in to next year. I'm not saying that we can't have a special season in '09, because we absolutely can. But if Bowens comes back with Baker (for a 6th year) and Irving, then you have three big time players to add to the squad that has a lot of experience, even without them. Thee are bound to be other guys that step up their game between now and then, and you get to add them to the previously mentioned veterans! That is not to mention guys like Wilson, Mageo, Mattes, M. Carter, O. Spencer, Williams, Graham, Barnes, Washington, Maddox, Beasley, G. Bryan, etc. etc. and on and on.
If our offense is as dynamic this year as it was at the end of the year last year, and the ACC is as weak in the passing game (our only defensive weakness) as it has been for the past several years, we have a shot at doing something special now. That would make the returning team for 2010 VERY Scary! Amen. Go Pack!

Wow! WPP, this is great. I am amazed that you were able to get footage of him working out in drills. I definitely am going to drop a little in your piggy bank. I never thought that this kind of information and knowledge could be had for free. I feel like I am stealing!

PPack I couldnt agree more, we are entering a season with high expectations but Im expecting the following season to be even higher with our recruits growing and learning more and more. All the keys are in place to really be 2 deep at every position and have stars on both sides of the ball.

We have talked about our secondary multiple times being the weakness in our squad, and you bring up great points with the lack of passing qb's in the acc, which gives me hope our younger guys can learn quickly on the job.

Maybe its just me but I dont see our kicking game being a big weakness for us. Josh Czajkowski looked very solid in the spring game when I saw him and he was very accurate last season from 35 yards and in. He is young but has had the opportunity to start at a young age which is huge for a kicker esp in end of game siutations and pressure starting to mount. Its been well documented that TOB stesses the importance of special teams and kicking which is why I believe we are much better off that many other schools. The only way to have a solid Spec Team is to practice day in and day out and have a coach impliment that work ethic. Hopefully Czajkowski can stay healthy because it could be a solid year for him if he can.

Anonymous, my old brain must be failing me you are correct about J Dunlap catching the hail mary, but for some reason I still want to say Bowens caught a hail mary pass... maybe the same year but the FSU game??? Maybe im just getting senile....

I believe Bowens caught a long, critical pass against Virginia -- either the same year as that Dunlap's Corner catch that beat BC, or the year after that. I can't remember. But it seems like it was practically a hail mary pass, as well. I don't think he scored on it. I think he just kept a drive alive or something.

it was bowens against uva had like 200 yards or something. and it seems like a hailmary because evans was throwing 50/50 balls up for grabs and he got everyone. even got a top performer sticker the next morning from mark may. course he called him david bowens

My favorite Bowens play is the one where he stiffarms a UNC guy, running right over him and dives into the end zone. I knew then that he was a player. I believe that was his freshman year.

As for the 2010 season, we do set up well except that we lose a LOT on both lines: OL-McCuller, Barbee, Larsen, and Williams - DL-Young, Cash, Burgess, and McKeen. There is talent behind them, but the guys are young and inexperienced. You do not expect to compete for championships when you lose that much on both lines. I actually think 2010 could be a small step back from this year.

Alum02, hopefully we're grooming replacements NOW for those linemen that we're losing in 2010. We redshirted an awful lot of players in 2008. 2010 will be their third year in the system. I think we'll be OK. We have the likes of Robert Crisp coming in, too.

I think the lines will be fine in '10... particularly the OL. We'll have plenty of talent and cumulative-yrs in the system returning (including several red-shirt and true freshmen studs).

There's a table on another website that gives a great breakdown of the '10 Fb recruiting board & Depth
