At Wolfpack Pigskin we believe that the better the ACC is, the better it is for every team in the ACC, including NC State. I understand that there might be exceptions when it comes to pulling for certain ACC schools, but it's a good rule of thumb normally. Here is a breakdown of today's ACC schedule:
(15) Georgia Tech - 37 vs. Jacksonville St.- 17
Boston College- 54 vs. Northeastern- 0
Wake Forest- 21 vs. Baylor- 24
Virginia- 14 vs. William & Mary- 26
(21) North Carolina- 40 vs. Citadel-6
Clemson- 37 vs. Middle Tennessee- 14
Duke- 16 vs. Richmond- 24
(7) Virginia Tech- 24 vs. (5) Alabama- 34
Maryland- 13 vs. (12) California- 52

25 Responses to "ACC Football: Week 1"GT won 37-17.
GT RB Dwyer had 95 yards rushing on 7 carries, with 2 TD's.
GT QB Nesbitt also ran for 93 yards on 14 carries, with 1 TD. He was also 7-12 for 162 yards with 1 passing TD as well.
GT's Thomas also had 101 yards receiving with 4 receptions.
GT's first play from scrimmage left JSU dumbfounded. 74(?) yard TD run for Dwyer on a pitch from Nesbitt. Great play. I enjoyed watching the game on ESPN360. Watching the WF game now. I hope VT can beat Alabama tonight and show the country that the ACC can hold its own against the SEC.
BC just crushed Northeastern 54-0.
BC's RB Harris had a big day with 115 yards (15 carries - 7.5 avg) and 2 TD's.
BC spread the ball out connecting with 10 different receivers! They also had 4 different people throw the ball as well.
Brandon,
For everyone who didn't see the GT game, give us your thoughts.
Future opponent Pittsburgh defeated Youngstown St. 38-3.
Pitt's RB Lewis had a monster day, racking up 128 yards on 20 carries (6.4 avg).
Starting QB Stull was 11-17 for 123 yards, 2 TD's and 1 INT.
Wake just fell to Baylor 24-21. Turnovers killed the Demon Deacons today, with QB Skinner throwing 3 INT's.
Wake did make a valiant effort at a comeback, coming back from a 24-7 defecit.
This isn't the start the ACC needed with State and Wake falling.
Skinner finished the game 20-33 for 141 yards with 2 TD's and 3 INT's.
VT vs Bama just proving once again that Defenses are usually further ahead week one compared to Offense.
WF lost to a respectable Baylor team but at home and having 3 INT's from Skinner is just hard to beleive (one was the receivers bad).
Right now Duke down 4 to Richmond in the second half and UVa has already lost the W & M (a team that we dealt with last season with Harrison Beck shooting from the hip). Ouch. The loss to Wyoming is going to sting less then this since we're talking FCS team that is in state.
The teams that beat the other FCS teams; GT, Clemson, BC, UNC did what they had to do and will be given a true test soon enough. VT and UMd loss would equal a devastating opening weekend.
It just got better. I live in Virginia and can't say I am not pumped to see them lose to William and Mary. I am also pumped to see Duke get smoked by UR. Go SPIDERS.
I agree that none of this appears great for the ACC. Tech winning only says that Tech and Miami are the only teams worth playing in the ACC. I did hear the guys on game day say that FSU was underrated and that their defense is supposedly the fastest it has ever been...dubious.
In UNC's 40-6 victory over the Citadel, RB Shaun Draughn seemed to be the force. He ran the ball 20 times for 118 yards and 2 TD's.
Quarterback play was a little suspect, but efficient enough, with T.J. Yates going 9-20 for 114 yards, 2 TD's and 1 Int.
The story of Clemson's 37-14 victory over Middle Tennessee was the early exit of C.J. Spiller. Spiller returned a kickoff 96 yards for a TD and almost did the same when he returned a punt for 50 yards. He came up gimpy and left the game shortly after. They don't think the injury is severe.
While Clemson's QB threw for under 50% (9-20), he threw 2 TD's and no int's for 159 yards.
With VT and Maryland still in action, the ACC currently sits 4-4 on opening weekend. Not quite the start I think most people were expecting.
Duke lost to Richmond 16-24 and UVA lost to William & Mary 14-26.
Anyone else irritated at the announcer bias in the VA Tech-Bama game?
Saw the first half and some of the second half of the GT game. The offense looked great. They were rolling, just as the stats would lead you to believe. Nesbitt was spreading the ball around well to the different receivers and backs with both passes and pitches out of the option. I was really impressed by their offense today.
Paul Johnson has done a great job down in Atlanta, though the crowd support was lacking. Could be that they were playing a FCS team, but the top of most sections were empty. Its nothing compared to Carter-Finley!
Herbstreit and Musburger on the VT-Bama game. Herbie is usually pretty good but Musburger needs a mute button after about 5 minutes.
Gawd, the ACC is taking it on the chin today.
The ACC as a whole looks bad offensively - with the possible exception of GT and potentially FSU.
IMO the first couple teams to establish a dominant OL will rise to the top of divisions. If most teams stay inconsitent in that area then 5-3 or even a 4-4 teams could meet in TB. Right now, with as unfortunate start to OL as wae had, the gap betweenour big uglies and the rest of the league still is slim.
Baylor swarmed Skinner and VT's OL knew the snap count but still couldn't get push.
O
Man that was a rough weekend for the ACC. Only wins were over championship subdivision teams I believe?
Sorry, but the gaudy stats against scrub teams does not impress me.
i feel alot better about our loss now
It looks like Duke was completly unable to get the ground game going. Their leading rusher, Boyette, ran 9 times for 15 yards.
QB Lewis threw an ungodly 55 times, connecting on 34. He threw for 350 and 2 TD's.
For those of you that didn't see the score, Bama beat VT 34-24. VT couldn't stop the run. VT RB Williams was the sole source of offense for the Hokies, getting in the Zone twice.

In the last game of the evening, Maryland wasn't expected to pull off the upset, and they didn't losing by a large margin of 13-52.
I was impressed with VT they did a lot better than I expected. THe ACC I still think is an underrated conference, but the ACC didn't help much by losing a lot of games they should have won.
Anyone else not impressed by Yates' 114 yards passing? Maybe its just me but UNC seems extremely over ranked....
VT looked pretty good despite having no offense for 3 quarters. Williams will be a good replacement at RB for them, Taylor reminds me very much of Wilson in the fact that it seems the coaching staff is pushing him very hard to stay in the pocket instead of run....
Duke losing to Richmond really shocked me. Nobody questions Lewis's ability, too back he has nobody to help him out...
Wake losing was just plain bad.
