Andrew Wallace: 'Ready When Called Upon'

No matter where a player is on the depth chart, they have to approach each game with the mindset that they are going to step on the field. They have to be ready for anything. All week long they prepare themselves to play. While all of this may be true, no Redshirt Freshman expects the Junior starter in front of him to go down with a injury after just 14 plays in the first game of the season. Not to mention that the game was kicking off the college football season on ESPN on a Thursday night. Welcome to the world of Redshirt Freshman Andrew Wallace.

Junior Offensive Tackle Jake Vermiglio went down with a leg injury in the season opener against South Carolina after just 14 snaps. Andrew Wallace had some big shoes to fill in a hurry. He was rushed out onto the field under the bright lights to fill the void at Left Tackle, which is arguably the most important position on the Offensive Line, because it guards Russell Wilson's blindside.

Wallace had a little bit of a rocky start, picking up two quick penalties in a span of 4 plays. One of those penalties nullified a 45-yard strike down the middle of the field to Owen Spencer.

"Going into the game I wasn't really nervous," Wallace said. "There were two big mistakes by me. You learn from your mistakes and go out and get them next game. That's the way you have to look at it."

And that is exactly what Wallace did. He learned from his mistakes and went out and battled against Murray St. and earned the starting job at Left Tackle against Gardner Webb. Wallace gives a lot of the credit to the three Seniors on the Offensive Line, who have been encouraging leaders to follow.

"Once you get down they'll pull you up. It started in the summer. They would hold workouts out here," Wallace said. "They wanted everyone to be there. They really want this team to be the greatest."

When Vermiglio went down, Wallace took advantage of the opportunity presented to him and gained some valuable experience. In fact, in the 111 snaps that he has played thus far in the 2009 season, he has yet to give up a sack. Wallace looks back on his Redshirt year and can see how it is paying off in the present.

"My Redshirt year was real good. I got a lot of experience on the scout team," Wallace said." I really learned a lot going against guys like Alan-Michael Cash and Willie Young every day."

When deciding on a college, NC State was a logical choice for Wallace. Not only was Raleigh not to far from home (Charlotte, NC), but Wallace had grown up pulling for the Wolfpack. On top of fulfilling a dream of playing college football for the team that he had cheered for since childhood, Wallace saw the NC State coaching staff as the perfect fit to help him pursue even bigger dreams.

"NC State's been my school most my life. The coaches here are good," Wallace said. Coach Horton puts players in the league. So does Coach O'Brien, and that's what I'm looking for."

When you examine the fact that 3 of the 5 starters on the Offensive Line are Seniors, you begin to realize that Andrew Wallace and his roommate R.J. Mattes are the future of NC State's blocking committee. Andrew is right, Coach O'Brien does put players in the league, especially Offensive Linemen. Mattes and Wallace might be the building blocks, but you better believe that Coach O'Brien and his staff will surround them with big fellas that also believe that this staff can get them to the next level.

I have some info that I wanted to share with everyone. Apparently, Al Groh is on the hot seat at UVa. From what I've heard, UVa commit and Wolfpack target Tyler Brosius would like to run with the pack but doesn't want to decommit until Groh resigns/gets fired. He doesn't want to heat up the hot seat, if that makes sense.

Interesting, I guess. We'll see what happens v. Chapel Hill this weekend. This is about the time of year that Groh actually begins to fight for his job. They had an off week in preparation. They have switched up their Offense (which is a recipe for disaster through the season, with the possible exception of the first game in which it is used. UNC doesn't have film of Sewell that isn't 2 years old, and they only know that it will be a relatively 'Pro-Style' Offense. It sets up to be a tough game for a UNC team that looked roungh v. GT. And, GT didn't play all that well.

I'll say it again, and I'll keep saying it... UNC's vaunted Defense will be holding their collective shorts at the end of the year, and TJ Yates (provided his stays healthy) will be running for his life all year. We went through some serious O-line problems several years ago and the parallels are real. Until they coach up those 'young' Linemen, they will win a lot of battles and lose a lot of wars. Good thing we have Major Pain coaching our team. J/K!

Anyway, I knew UNC was going to get beat in Atlanta because they are not a disciplined team (ref. drugs, fighting etc). I'm just saying that the UCONN game was very unimpressive. The ECU game is starting to look like UNC beat a 'not-so-good' team. It sets up to be another confusing Defensive game this weekend versus Virginia. Al Groh very well may squeeze enough Offense out of his new scheme, and get enough pressure on Yates to pull out the win.

I would be interested to see what QB recruits TOB has in his sights for the next class or two. I know he likes to take one every year, if possible. Has Brocious attended camp at State? If so, was he offered after? The whole situation with Glennon being one year behind Wilson will be interesting to see come to some sort of resolution. Will Wilson leave early? Will Glennon stay? And will that affect how, and who TOB recruits for the next year or two?

Thanks for the comment Anony. It makes for some interesting food for thought.

    Go Pack!

I have to believe Tyler Brosius is very interested in running with the Pack. First of all, who in their right mind would choose Virginia over NC State right now? But secondly, Brosius was reportedly at the Pitt game last weekend. And his hometown is 275 miles from Raleigh. That's close to a five hour drive! For me, that's the kicker in all this. He had to make a BIG effort to get to Raleigh for our game.

I know I wouldn't want one of our recruits driving five hours to watch some other team play! That would be like finding out that your girlfriend has been hanging out with the high school quarterback!

I guess UVa was off last week, so at least he didn't choose an NC State game over a UVa game, but still...

Question is, if Groh starts winning games, and cools his hot-seat, would Tyler still like to de-commit (assuming he does want that)? Or is he just expecting it to be a foregone conclusion that Groh will be gone, and is just waiting for it to happen?

Truth, It'll be REALLY interesting to see what happens this weekend. UNC may walk Groh's dog, but I get a funny feeling about UVA's chances in this one.

Brocious had to be impressed with the atmosphere on Saturday. Even with the rain (though it was nothing like the USF game last year) almost nobody left. Not only that, but it was crazy in The Carter during the fourth quarter. It surprised me how loud it got for a game that wasn't FSU, Miami, VT or UNC. Not only that but the tailgating scene is awesome out there. recruits have to look at the sea of buses, RV's, U-Haul's, SUV's, used ambulances, and other vehicles living it up before kick-off! The student parking, despite the reputation, is full of high-energy kids that just want to have a good time, and they do.

Anybody been to a UVA game lately? Care to share your experience? I have a hard time believing that it is comparable to Carter-Finley Stadium on a Saturday in the Fall. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

PPack, I'm the same way. I just have a funny feeling about this game. I've been on WRAL blogs posting my prediction of a UVa major upset this weekend! (Of course, I include the disclaimer that I don't REALLY think it will happen, but it could...)

A few things (just some food for thought):

    1) UVa lost to William & Mary, who happens to be 4-0 right now and I believe made a lengthy run in the FCS playoffs last year.

    2) UVa only lost by 16 to the #10 team in the country.

    3) UVa only lost by three (in a fairly high scoring game) on the road at Southern Miss, who has only lost one game -- on the road at a ranked Kansas team, and only by 7 points.

    4) UVa is coming off their bye week. Allegedly, they are re-tooling their offense to be more of a spread offense. Granted, UVa is no Georgia Tech, but that is the same type of offense that gave Carolina fits last weekend. And they now have game film for plays that GT ran successfully against Carolina's defense. (Can you say "blueprint"?)

    5) Historically, UVa is one of those teams (like GT) that seems to have Carolina's number in football. And they stole that game from the Heels last year. What better way to end a three game skid than to beat a team like Carolina on the road?

    6) Carolina's confidence may be rocked right now, knowing how they got beat in the last game.

Virginia might be awful, or they might be a little better than awful. Keep in mind that Carolina hasn't exactly shown themselves to be a powerhouse, either. Unless you think that 3-1 record actually means something considering the teams they've played.

I'm just sayin'........ it could happen. Having said all this, I think Carolina wins by about 17. But don't think the upset CAN'T happen! For kicks, I'm still calling for it.
