George Bryan: Monday Press Conference (9/28/09)
KEY QUOTES
on whether the team was surprised when Coach O'Brien said "This is a bad football team.
" I believe we all agreed with him. There was a lot that could be improved from that game. We also agree with him how he said we learned how to fight for 60 minutes of the ball game, but there's a lot of stuff that we can definitely improve on."
on whether it was an advantage or disadvantage to start the season with 4 home games...
"I would consider it an advantage. We know how we're going to play at home, we're 3-1 now, we're playing well. The crowds backing us up good because theres a buzz about us. I think us playing home helped us come together and I think there wasn't as much pressure because we had people backing us up."
on how smart Russell Wilson is....
"Football wise, probably the smartest player that I've ever played with. He just understands the game so well and that's a credit to him because he's the first one in the film room, studying, breaking down film and stuff. He just puts in the work and it shows out on the field."

Interesting article on State Winning the NC recruiting battle w/ unc...
George is one of my favorite players, having been a state fan his whole life and choosing to walk on and earn time and he has proven himself time and time again(I assume hes earned a Ship). You really see him show up in the redzone and on 3rd down, which is when a TE can become a QBs best friend.
GB is the man! This guy has got hands and can put a hit on a defender with the best of them. Think about next year, when big Super Mario 2 is lined up on the other end (or sometimes the same end) of the line! That is going to be SCARY! This is just what TOB and crew wanted to bring to Raleigh, and the pieces are falling into place.
I love that article PackLeader! Thanks for linking it. I rarely go over to the N&O site anymore. But, that was worth the read just for the comments. Are you ready for another little rant? No? Okay. Here it goes...
Butch Davis = Chuck Amato.
I've been drawing parallels between the two coach's tenures since the day Butchy was hired. Now, I know that there are some UNC fans that peruse this site, and I'm not being totally derogatory, despite how much you may not have liked Chuck Amato. Let me just paint a picture for you.
CTC and BMFD showed up while the cupboard was not exactly bare. They hit the ground running in the recruiting game by retaining committed talent. They sold their new recruits on the fact that Championships would be won and facilities were going to be much improved. They recruit(ed) 4-5 star, skill position players (for the most part) that mostly hailed from out of state, with an 'all or nothing' style. They both got/get some of the in-state talent early on, and then that tailed off (with Butch it is a bit too early to provide evidence of this). There has been 'attrition' in both cases that stem from of-the-field problems, and that translates into a less disciplined team on the field. Coaching turnover. Winning the big games and not the little ones. Falling below expectations that have been set by the media, as well as the coach. The bravado of the coaches and players. Etc., etc.
You don't have to look far to see the similarities. Again. I don't mean these points to be taken as (too) negative by fans of either coach. I think that they both brought some much needed excitement to their respective schools. They both (if Keenan's actually gets done) instigated renovations to facilities that were/are falling behind others in the country.
But, again, the effects of coaching turnover, off-the-field issues, O-line problems, sub-par QB development, penalties and discipline problems (on-the-field) and a drop-off in recruiting means that very high expectations won't be/didn't get met. That's never a good sign.
One other difference. Chuck was an Alum. He would have stayed forever if he was allowed. Butch? Different story. When the going gets tough, I have the feeling that the tough (BMFD) will get going. I always have felt this way about Davis. I could be wrong on all accounts here. I may be crazy. But, I don't think that I am. Each day that passes, I thank God that we ended up with TOB.
One more thing about recruiting in the state of NC. There are tons of NCSU fans, as evidenced by the number of donors, ticket holders, alumni, alumni's children (etc.), in North Carolina. Football is King, right now, in Raleigh, not so in CH. All of the kids, who play football in NC, are automatically interested in our facilities, coaches, University, fans and education that NCSU provides. They want to go somewhere, locally, that their parents and friends will be able to see them play on an SEC-like stage. If they don't like NCSU, they are leaving the state.
Why not UNC? The experience at Keenan is much like the one in Charlottesville. There are a few die-hard football fans that know their stuff, and have been there forever. But there are more people using it as a networking event. "Hey look, something just happened...(golf clap)." Carolina will always be a Basketball school. And, I hate to say that, because I believe that there have been programs that have sustained success in both Basketball and Football, for certain lengths of time. It is possible. I think that we can strike that balance much sooner than can UNC. UNC and Davis are constantly held to standards by the media, that defy explanation. I attribute this phenomena to their success in Basketball and name recognition. But those expectations trickle down to the fans, and ultimately to the administration. And that's without the coach ever having to say a thing! It's a recipe for a 'cut-and-run,' ala Mack Brown. That is, if Davis is a commodity. He has to win in order to get better offers. If not, he'll be shown the door either way. Lose, lose.
Why NC State? The atmosphere at CF is a clear step up from any other venue in the state. ECU is the possible exception to that rule, only on a smaller scale. The coaching staff has been, and will be, counted on to stay in tact. They are proven winners and evidently, make recruits feel like they will be part of a brotherhood, a fraternity, of sorts. They offer some of the best facilities in the country, and their fans are loyal to a fault. I want to play for TOB, and I'm 35. All of these guys get better through TOB's program. They develop into strong football teammates over their 4-5 years under this staff. They are given the respect that they give. They are taught. They are motivated. They are molded into men. Academics are stressed. Community involvement is stressed. These are things that parents can appreciate. In a lot of ways, kids appreciate that sort of structure as they are about to take on the monumental task of playing big time college football while trying to get a big time college education at the same time. Why NC State? Why not.
I don't know how I got off on that tangent. I hope nobody has fallen asleep reading this. If so, I apologize. But WPP is much cheaper than a psychiatrist! HA!
Go Pack!
