Tom O'Brien: Postgame Press Conference : NC State vs. Pitt

KEY QUOTES
"Right now we're not good football team and I'm not a good coach. We had lots of penalties, we couldn't make tackles. I have a lot of work to do this week, the team has a lot of work to do this week. From a positive standpoint, we played hard, we didn't quit. The team was resilient, the kids hung in there. We have to look in the mirror before we start ACC play."

"We'll definitely take it. It was a really good win, but September is over and now we're heading into ACC play. Right now we're not a championship team. We have to play better."

"In the first half, we were too tight and too scared. We didn't have any confidence. They decided to come out and play in the second half. On offense we kept chipping away and chipping away and the confidence and game changed from there."

"Our (running)backs ran really well. It was great to get Jamelle Eugene back. He had a couple of runs at the end to ice the game for us."

I truly hate I missed that!!! But I was on the road today, and only got to hear bits and pieces of the game on the radio.

I am very happy for the team and coaches!!!

Like I said a week or so ago, I think that there's a possibility that while the earlier game SC game was good for the team, it may also be a game that we'll be wishing we could get a do-over on when the season ends.

GREAT GAME WOLFPACK!!! Now let's keep the intensity level up and play hard without any let downs.

Side note: You wouldn't believe how many people called or came by wanting to bet me on the NC State vs unc game during work last week. Nor would you believe how many of those wagers I accepted.

I'll just tell you, every damn one of them, and I upped them all!!!

Fre'Shad Hunter commits. By my accounts, this gives us three of the top five from NC in the 2010 class.

    Great news Anon!!!

Hopefully this is true and we can get some momentum on the recruiting trail. I had heard he was "ready to end the process" but I could only hope he was leaning towards the pack!!

RFred i have a sneaky feeling you will be buying dinner a few times after you cash in on those wagers!!!

^ Big news...haven't seen the news on that yet.

^^ redfred, I was in the same position. I could not watch the game, but did catch some of it on the radio. From what I heard, it sounded like we were missing some tackles and our secondary was getting smoked for the big play on more than one instance. Even worse, they were getting beat into the endzone by a mile.

Are we really lacking that much speed or are their receivers that good?

On offense, it sounded like we got away with a couple of calls. If things had gone differently with the last Pitt series and we lost, what would fans say cost us the game? Some may say penalties, but from the short moments on the radio, it sounded like there were some fortuitous interference calls. Can any who saw the game give a report?

Eric I kinda feel we were very tentative the first half, not over matched talent wise. We did make dumb penalties (numerous false starts) but I dont agree that we got "bailed out" on the final scoring drive. Both major flags were pass interference and from my view the first was a great break (that he caught the ball anyway) and the pass interference in the endzone clearly was pushed in the back because the ball went soaring over his head.

We definitely missed tackles but we seemed to figure out how to break their line of scrimmage w/ linebacker blitzing and zone blitzes. The long pass for them was just a good play, and yes that WR was VERY QUICK, but not so sure our guys were noticeably slower.

Offense could have EASILY put up 50 points if we had scored before the end of the half w/ 40sec left and a 1st and goal on the 1 instead of kicking a field goal. Also 2 missed fieldgoals right there is a 10 point swing right there. Russell looked as comfortable in the pocket as ive seen him yet still confident enough to run. The 4th and 14 in the 4th quarter was the best play ive seen in along time....

Pitt was a very worthy opponent, but dont get too down on the missed tackles, trust me our d wont let up 31 points often....

Word on the streets is Tyler Brosius has also committed. Not sure of the validity of this statement, but I know we were a favorite early on. With UVA not doing so well, i could see this, but once again, not sure with the validity.

Word also on the street was he was at the game today (Tyler, that is).

Thanks for the info Pack Leader. Those moments right before the half were spent with the family in the car, and me biting my cheeks so as not to ruin the rest of the ride.

Hahn suggested some moments when it sounded like our receivers were the ones pushing off rather than the other way around. It's why I asked.

What was your read on our D Line and Linebackers. Didn't sound like we were hitting the QB or even rushing him very much. Again, I didn't hear much of the game, so hopefully, we were getting some push up front.

Other than the bad snap, did you think the line performed well? I enjoyed hearing how we were stopping the blitz by beating them on screens and quick slants, rather than packing everyone in to block. RW making that read will pay dividends throughout the season. Sounded like they had one DT that was a monster...some ridiculous number of tackles for a loss in the game. Haven't checked the box score, but any notes on him and how our line performed would be great.

The team played as poorly as I've seen, discipline wise, during the TOB era. But they played a gritty game in the second half a gutted out a win.

Great news about our new commit! The atmosphere was fantastic! I don't doubt that a game like the one that I just saw could push a recruit to want to run with the Pack!

Props to B Bishop and T Manning! Both made huge plays in the second half! If Bishop doesn't pop their reciever in the endzone on their last drive, we would still be playing ball right now! Manning was an intesnse head hunter out there and took the energy level way up in pressure situations! These are young guys with heart. I urge you all to check out previous entries, here at WPP, pertaining to these two young men. Great efforts.

And UNC chalked up the 'L' today. Good day. Good day.

    Go Pack!

    Great win for the pack.

I thought the poor special teams play put our defense on the spot too much early on, that seemed to make the D play tentative. Pitt has a great O-line, we could not get to their QB or penetrate much.

TOB went to the passing game in the second half and it looked pretty good. Those pass interference calls against Pitt were good calls, not bailouts. The Pitt defenders knew they were beat. The passing success opened up the run game, the D tightened up, and the game tilted our way.

I hope we can work out the issues with our punting. Seemed like they were just glad to be able to get the ball off without a block.

Any new info on Brosius or Amerson? Did one or both commit or silently commit...or does it look good for us with them?

Amerson just visited Notre Dame and he is visiting UNC on November 14th for the UNC vs. Miami game. At this point Amerson's Top-4 is NC State, Notre Dame, Clemson and Virginia Tech. Many still believe the Pack to be in the lead. He is looking to possibly visit NC State and Wake Forest in the near future.
