Wilson "All Highs, No Lows" Going into Matchup with Murray State

Russell Wilson doesn't really have an interest in taking about the negatives from last Thursday's South Carolina game. Like any good quarterback, he learns from his mistakes, and then he presses forward. "I watched the video and I've moved forward. Now, we're just making sure we're getting better in practice and getting ready for Saturday's game." Wilson said Tuesday morning.

After a disappointing 7-3 loss to South Carolina on Thursday, Wilson reiterated that nothing is amiss with him or the team, and he still holds full confidence in this entire team going forward.

"It was 7-3, it isn't like we got blown out. The defense played well and the offense needs to make improvements. I'm just pushing harder in practice this week....(Having confidence in my receivers) is my job. I have confidence that I when I throw it, that they'll catch it 10 out of 10 times. Sometimes it doesn't happen, but I'm still going to throw it to them. I'm still going to have that confidence that they'll make the play." Wilson said when asked about what the team needs to do differently and whether he feels there were plays down the stretch that could've have been made which would have changed the whole outcome.

The loss sparked discussion over the weekend, about the health of the sophomore quarterback's knee, and whether he was slower, or the South Carolina defense was that fast. Wilson was sacked 6 times and only totaled 16 yards (not including sacks) on the ground, all for a quarterback known for creating havoc with his legs. "I did get caught from behind those two times, but I was still going through my progressions. I wasn't thinking about (Coach O'Brien and Media consitantly talking about the injury last season and using the sideline and slides as protection). I was trying to go through my progressions and make good throws."

The Pack looks forward to the Murray State Racers this Saturday, a team who hung 66 points on Kentucky Wesleyan. Wilson is looking forward as well. When asked how the highs and lows of these past weeks were effecting him, he said "I don't remember the highs and lows of last weeks game, but that is done. The high this week is getting better in practice. I'm going to make sure I get better , the wide receivers get better, the offensive line and the tight ends block better, and that's the high of the week. The low of the week, there is no low of the week."

Like Russell said, Whats he going to do not throw to the WR??? He going to boycott them?? no way hes always been a positive player thats why his teammates respect him and play harder for him. I still wonder if his knee is 100% but thats just me the fan talking...

Ill tell you one thing, Murry State aint going to put up 66 on our D!!! Willie aint seein that!!!

Russell just always seems to say the right things. I'm not worried one bit about this young man. It was the first football game of the season, the team will make corrections and the team will improve. Thanks for the video coverage and the articles guys. I love the way this site is growing!

Any chance we can start getting some more "Where are they now" from the lesser known players of the past. Thats my favorite part of the basketball site.

We will have some "Where are they now?" Coming shortly. I promise. Things have been crazy here at WPP with the season starting up.

I'm a little bothered by something. Our guys seemed a little *TOO* upbeat following that loss. I mean, I'm happy that they're confident and all, but they should be more upset with themselves for not playing better. We have a lot of work to do. Their upbeat attitude makes me think they believe success will just come to them without having to work for it.

I would like to see more of a sense of urgency from these guys to right the ship. I'm afraid we might lose more games that we shouldn't lose before they get urgent. Frankly, I hope we don't wait until we have several losses under our belts before we reach the point of urgency that we need.

I'm reminded a little (just a little) of the false optimism that we got from the, um, previous coach whose name shall remain unmentioned.

I want to see a little more FIRE from these guys. I hope we come out and win the next two by 50, and I want to see them craving more points as the clock reaches zero!

I too am a bit concerned at how non-chalant everyone is about the loss (except TOB). The score should have really been 13-3. The fact that they botched two relatively easy FGs was a gift. 13-3 is not a blow out, but it does give more of an indication that U of SC won this game decisively, as opposed to the thin margin of 7-3, which a lot of people will use as an indication of our performance.

While I appreciate the 'look forward' attitude, I would appreciate a reality check even more. We made a lot of mistakes and looked shaky quite often. I think we should clearly articulate where we went wrong, why, and how we're overcoming those obstacles. By bunching everything together like 'it wasn't that bad', 'D played well', 'there aren't really any negatives and we're just getting better every day' makes it appear as if we're not learning from our mistakes.

Don't think that the guys aren't down about the loss. They all seemed genuinely disappointed. They are just keeping their chins up.

Also, I totally agree that the score could have very easily been 13-3. At the same time, it also could have easily been 6-3, if South Carolina doesn't get the ball on the 14 after Baker fumbles.

I am passionate about Wolfpack football. So, it's disappointing for me to hear complacency from our men after such a poor performance on the home field. Complacency is what I've heard from everyone's post game remarks so far - they're basically trying to polish a turd of a performance. The 7-3 final score does not really reflect how badly we were outplayed. Physically it was not a close game. Besides, it's still a loss - on our home field.
It would make my year if our men had the passion of T. Tebow after Florida's loss to Ole Miss, when he vowed that you would never see anyone play harder. The tackling was downright awful Thursday night. I hope Coach is having serious discussions with the defensive coaches about tackling.
Russel did a good job not turning the ball over, penalties were minimal, and the kicking game (except the early block), was decent. These three things have haunted us in recent years. Now that we have a handle on these key items we should be winning ball games -- passionately!

I've been trying to hold back, but I have to say it. So, after the way the team came together and responded late last season, after the way that RW came in and took over the show just coming off an injury, the way that his RUNNING as well as passing abilities sent opposing defenses rocking on their heels, and the way that his multi-skilled package aided in making a possibly bad offensive line look much better than they actually were/are, how in the world do you encourage a kid to change any facet of that???!!!

And, if anyone is going to tell me that the staff is doing what is "right" in not wanting to put RW into any positions where he is more likely to get injured...

If that's the case, then the coaching staff must have really screwed up last season, huh? That's when they gave RW the nod to just go back in, scramble and create havoc, run the ball in the open field for 30 yard gains and scores whenever the opportunity presents itself, throw darts for others, and simply play Russell Wilson's game. All of that, right after coming off an injury.

Where was all of this noble concern last season when RW was even more vunerable after just coming back from recuperating from injury? Why wouldn't they felt like they needed play it "safe" then, and even much moreso???

Something isn't quite adding up either way, and you can't have it both ways. I hate to be the one to have come right out and say it, but if it wasn't for RW's running ability, we may not have ever gotten the opportunity to know what kind of a great passer he truly is. TOB and staff screwed up by encouraging him to play a different way.

Only thing that could possibly make any sense to me about it, is if the coaching staff was thinking that the OL needs to learn how to do their jobs, straight up, without the assist of a mobil QB. Say like for later, when RW is gone and the next QB steps into that position. I don't think any staff would do that though???

I'm fairly certain we're going to see a reversal and Russell Wilson being allowed to get back to being Russell Wilson in pretty short order.

I don't think the plan to have Russell go through the progression first was the problem. It was the O-line play and lack of pass protection. If that keeps failing, then certainly RW will need to revert to the scramble, but that can't be the strategy for consistent success.

I think TOB will stay the course.

If it takes 4 sec. to look through progression of 3 recievers, and you only have 2 sec. to make a decision, its not going to be a good end result. Now if you have 5 sec to look and make a decision or tuck and run, odds are in your favor. Things will change but it also hurt starting 80% of our drives w/ our back at our own goalline.

Honestly im not sure if we are over confident, but we have to feel good that it was our game to lost w/ 2 min left, and we played our worst offensive game in 2 years.... 2 plays go differnetly and we are 1-0 feeling on top of the world. One thing I know is we are NOT virgina, We do NOT lose to schools like William & Mary/Murray State......

    Dof & PL,

I agree with both of you guys, if the QB isn't looking to run the ball, then the defense gets to play to their strengths. I agree about the lack of time but that's exactly we NEED a QB with RW's abilities more than ever. A straight up, pocket passer, can't go through his progressions or get the ball off when there isn't a pocket to be found anywhere.
