This is not a transcript of everything that was said in last night's radio show, rather it is a rundown of the main things that Coach O'Brien addressed.
-He discussed the bye-week. It was a great chance to look at the entire operation. They got to go back and dissect every offensive and defensive play that has been played. At this point in the season it is too late to make major philosophical changes, but personnel can be altered if available and minor tweaks can be made.
-James Washington's injury will not require surgery, but it will require 5-6 weeks of rest. Ten players are now listed as "out for the season." He said he had never experienced a team that had that many injuries, and doubts that many coaches ever have. He estimated that he didn't even have 10 players listed as "out for the season" in the entire 6 years he was at Boston College.
-The coaching staff is trying hard to keep the redshirts on, but it is becoming increasingly difficult. Seven out of the 10 players that are out, would have seen significant playing time.
-The defense has only caused 8 turnovers thus far, and that is not up to par. This defense is built around creating turnovers. They have been working really hard on stripping the ball. The offense needs to improve on 3rd down conversions, which would be a big help in keeping the defense off the field.
-One caller asked Coach O'Brien why he didn't show more emotion on the sidelines? He responded by saying that he can't get too hyped, because then he won't be able to think. Coach O'Brien described himself like a cup of coffee...eventually he cools off. Many coaches imitate other coaches and fail. It is important to be yourself. If he thought that doing cartwheels and jumping up and down would help his team win, he would do it, but he doesn't think it would help.
-Coach also mentioned that they had voted on offensive and defensive MVP's through the first half of the season. Toney Baker was the recipient of the offensive award and Alan Michael-Cash took home the defensive award.

3 Responses to "Recap of Coach O'Brien's Radio Show (10/26/09)"Working on stripping the ball is great as long as the guys remember to make the tackle as opposed to just trying to strip the ball. I really feel for TOB and staff. They have had so many injuries to deal with. TOB didn't want to talk about it much in year one or the first part of year two. But this year he is pretty open about all the injuries and acknowledges that it has taken its toll on the team.
What's up with all the injuries on this team? It seems like it happens every year, maybe they need to make some changes in the strength & conditioning program.
^We went through the same thing on basketball for a couple of seasons. I believe they even brought in specialists who took micro-measurements of the RBC floors. In the end, they changed around the strength and conditioning programs.
Change did that good (knocking on wood).
