NC State head football coach Tom O’Brien has announced that freshman cornerback Rashard Smith and redshirt sophomore defensive end Jeff Rieskamp will miss the remainder of the season due to injuries. Smith, who had moved back into the starting lineup for the Boston College game, injured his knee in the second quarter of that contest. Rieskamp, who started two games in 2008, underwent surgery on Friday, October 16, for a sports hernia. He has not seen action in a game all season because of the injury.
Those two players bring the total of players lost for the season due to injury to nine for the Wolfpack. They join TE Mario Carter (knee), LB Ryan Cheek (hip), OL Denzelle Good (shoulder), LB Nate Irving (leg), FB Colby Jackson (knee), QB Everett Proctor (shoulder) and S Javon Walker (knee).

It won't matter anyway. This season is long over already. Time for basketball!
No need to burn the red shirts now. We need to just go with what we have and hope for the best.
"It won't matter anyway. This season is long over."
While I'm sure the basketball team appreciates your anticipation, I don't think the above statement is appropriate to anyone who claims to be a true NC State fan.
Losing Smith is a big blow to the defense. As a true freshman, he was probably the best cover corner that we had on the field.
A negative attitude from the fan base can do absolutely nothing to help the team win on Saturdays.
Hey WPP/WPH, is there any chance that we could be seeing Dean Haynes or any of the other Freshman DBs?
Nine guys out for the season... with Bowens currently out indefinitely that makes TEN.
You know how many Division I teams have that many guys out? ZERO.
I had no idea Smith left the game and didn't come back in on Sat? I think he gained a good deal of experience in the very short time he played and the coaches, players, and fans got a glimpse of a real good one suiting up for the Wolfpack. Hopefully next year with Irving and Smith returning our back 7 will have some high caliber ACC playmakers in the mix.
Have no idea what exactly the dreaded sports hernia is but have heard the term throw out there enough to know that it's serious. Don't know if I mentioned it here before but by far #99 JR is my favorite player to root for; not only is he a former Y swimmer at Nationals like some family of mine but he is just a good guy from my my accounts of meeting face to face with him ans his family who loves being hard working. Watching the team go 3-4 this season with two wins over FCS teams has been rough; not seeing the player you root hardest play just makes this early season sting all the more.
As far as DB's go they (Archer, TOB, Reed) have played so many that the silver lining in this is that burning a RS is not a given. If Byrd was physically or mentally ready I think he would have seen action by now; but there is a lot of time between now and FSU for that to change.
Have to remember that Byers is CB that could progress through out the season- Safety was not a good position for him since his speed was not outstanding and his angles were too aggressive. I think once he settles more into the the CB position that he can be relied upon if he improves his open field tackling technique. You usually don't like to have a CB play man with his straight line speed but possibly his time at Safety has taught him lessons of turning his shoulders, running and not letting a man by him; all while adjusting to the ball in order to be a play makers not just a warm body out there.
Nobody should count out KG going forward at CB. He will take this time during the bye to fix some errors- he made the most of Spring practice and he will regain some of that confidence lost this season, of the extreme frustrating category, during drills this week. He's a Sr. and a former walk-on; this is his last shot. He WILL come back with everything he's got in him. Count on it.
Really what we're talking about here is a down grade slightly in pure athleticism but mostly the confidence and swagger Smith brought to the table. One of these guys can step up to the challenge and I think by the Coaches track record we will know pretty well by the two prior to FSU. It's not going to take the wave of a magic wand, but a strong bye week followed by confidence we will get when we stop the athletic skill position guys FSU lines up with. That game could be just the confidence boost that this group back there needs to settle in and play like championships.
One more thing; Besides the help former walk on Robert Bell has brought the secondary as far as depth just remember one name instead of thinking playing more true freshman: So. Jordan Monk
