Former NC State defensive back, Brian Williams, will miss the remainder of the 2009 football season, after tearing his ACL in Sunday's win over the Bears. The injury occurred in the fourth quarter of the game, when Williams was defending a pass in the end zone, that was intended for Bears tight end Greg Olsen. The pass fell incomplete and so did the remainder of the 2009 season for Williams.
Williams, an 8 year veteran in the NFL, spent time playing with Minnesota (02-05) and Jacksonville (06-08) before joining the Falcons this season. After starting 7 games as a rookie for the Vikings, Williams has been a perennial starter at the cornerback position for his entire career. Through 8 seasons of play, Williams has played in 112 games and has accumulated 463 tackles, 60 pass deflections and 19 interceptions.
The loss of Williams will be a tremendous blow to the Falcons defense. Not only are they losing a starter, they are also losing a seasoned veteran that is a voice of leadership in the secondary.
Williams already had a good relationship with Falcons head coach Mike Smith before he landed in Atlanta prior to the start of the season. Smith was Williams defensive coordinator for two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Smith understands the magnitude of losing a veteran like Williams.
"It's going to be a big loss for us but it's going to be an opportunity for another player on our squad," Smith said to the AP.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Williams.

2 Responses to "Williams' '09 Campaign Ends Early"Man, that's tough. Brian, I hope all goes well with rehab. We'll be awaiting your return next season!
BTW, it's a ghost town over here, WPP. I hope the amount of posts, lately, is not indicative of the amount of readership. I also hope that neither is not an indication of Pack fans writing this team off.
The players and the coaches need our fans to support this team.
BTW, the clock just ran out on Butch and the boys in baby blue (or NAVY BLUE)! Ol' Bobby took 'em out, Doggonnit. It's too bad, too, on National TV and all. And, there was a really good Garnet and Blue crowd there for their first ever Thursday Night ESPN Game. It's going to be interesting to see what's on the line when we meet up with UNC. Maybe nothing. Maybe a Bowl Game on the line, best case scenario. But I would take it.
Go Pack!
