ACC Time Capsule: NC State's 1963 ACC Championship

A lot of things can change in one year's time. In 1962, Earle Edwards NC State Wolfpack struggled mightily, finishing the season with a 3-6-1 overall record. Edwards went back to the drawing board after the '62 campaign. After winning a measly 3 games in '62, NC State did more than double that number in '63, finishing the season with an 8-3 record. The Wolfpack's 6-1 conference record was enough for a share of the ACC title with UNC. NC State clinched a share of the title when they defeated Wake Forest 42-0 in Riddick Stadium on Friday, November 22 of 1963. The thrill of clinching the school's second ACC championship, was trumped by the heartbreaking news that came just hours before kickoff, that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated.

Earle also picked up his 2nd ACC Coach of the Year award, and would eventually collect two more in '65 and '67. 1963 was a big year for the ACC, sending 2 teams to bowl games for the first time in the conference's young history. NC State faced off against Mississippi St. in the Liberty Bowl, which was the Pack's first bowl appearance in 17 years. It was also the Pack's fist televised game since 1958, when they lost to Clemson 6-13. Unfortunately the season didn't end the way that the Wolfpack would have hoped, losing to the Bulldogs 12-16.

Did Coach Edwards get chastised for losing to UNC like today's coaches? I guess the 8 wins and ACC championships help!

During Coach Edwards 17 year tenure, the rivalry was pretty much a dead heat, with the Pack coming out on top with a 9-8 series record.

Throw in two 1-AA teams and that could be a modern schedule!

Can anyone please tell me why Fre'shad Hunter is now listed not as a commit and his interest in NC State is low??? Did we lose him?

"However, Hunter will not be returning to the Cary team. Though other starters were suspended for missing practice, Hunter broke an undisclosed team rule.

Hunter's mother and Kolstad met and decided it would be best for the player to sit out the rest of the year.

"What happened is there were some team rules broken, and it kind of became a mutual decision between me and his mom that he was going to focus on academics and nothing else," Kolstad said."

Scout has taken him off of NC State's commit list, yet Rivals still has him as committed to State. We will see what we can find out.

Thanks hopefully he didn't decommit because we are having a bad season. We def don't want that trend to start happening.

    Siamak,

While I think you worries are a cause for concern, you have to remember that recruits commit to a program and a coach, not just to one string of games. I think you will realize that you don't know what you are talking about.

    Bobak,

While you may be correct about the coach and a program, this still does not change the fact that you must do what you dont get it how you feel. FEEEEL MEEEE?

Thanks for the feedback WPH. Sounds like it was a great and exciting time to be a Wolfpack fan.

Man Honestly I have learned in the past that those other sites R***ls and S%%%T seem to get quite a few mistakes on their sites. Im sure that if he was decommitted then they would have has some sort of a write up. Im going to say that it is some sort of a mistake and that it will be corrected. By the way just leave it up to the pros at WPP to get to the bottom of it.
