Key Play Rewind: NC State vs. South Carolina

1st Quarter

-Audie Cole absolutely crushed Brian Maddox in the backfield, forcing a fumble that was recovered by South Carolina for a 7 yard loss. This play got the crowd on their feet, and South Carolina was forced to punt on their first possession after Willie Young brought Maddox down after a short gain.

-Toney Baker fumbled the ball on the first offensive play for the Wolfpack on the Pack's own 17-yard line. This fumble led to the only points South Carolina would put on the board all night long, via a 1-yard run by Maddox.

-Ruiz's punt was blocked at around the 4:42 mark in the 1st Quarter, and South Carolina recovered the ball in NC State territory on the 38-yard line.

-Garcia threw what initially looked like a 38-yard touchdown pass to Gurley, but was called back due to offensive pass interference. South Carolina ended up punting on this possession.

2nd Quarter

-With NC State pinned down at their own end zone, Russell Wilson connected with Owen Spencer on a 45 yard pass that was a bullet right down the middle of the field. Unfortunately the play was called back due to a penalty against the Pack, for having an ineligible receiver on the play. Instead carrying the momentum of a big play into South Carolina territory, the Pack was forced to punt out of their own end zone.

-With South Carolina perched in the red zone on the 9-yard line, Shea McKeen came up with a huge play that prevented the Gamecocks from putting 7 more points on the board, sacking Garcia for a 4-yard loss.

-South Carolina botched a 30-yard field goal attempt with 5:05 left to play in the half, giving the ball back to NC State on the 19-yard line. This was a huge break for NC State, seeing as the score could have easily been 10-0.

3rd Quarter

-With South Carolina planted on the NC State 10-yard line looking to score on their first drive of the second half, Audie Cole came flying through the line forcing Garcia to throw the ball away, possibly saving 7 point from going on the board.

-South Carolina's kicker Spencer Lanning missed a 27-yard field goal, preventing the Gamecocks from gaining a 10-point lead.

-On South Carolina's second drive of the second half, Michael Lemon picked off Garcia's pass on the NC State 40-yard line. This took away great field position from the Gamecocks, and swung the momentum in the Pack's favor.

-Czajkowski connected on a 43-yard field goal with 56 seconds left in the quarter, bringing the Pack within 4 points of the Gamecocks.

4th Quarter

-With 4:15 left in the game, Freshmen Rashard Smith returned a punt 31 yards. This gave the Pack roughly 4 minutes to create 49 yards of offense.

-Jay Smith dropped a pass in the end zone that would have given the Pack a 10-7 lead.

-Garcia makes a 37 yard completion to Brown, which ended up being the play that practically put the game out of reach for the Pack.

Somehow the officials missed an OBVIOUS facemask on Rashard!!! that would have helped us so much on the last drive of the game!

Positive was Audie Cole!! That guy is a play maker!!!

Receivers should be out TODAY catching balls. ALL OF THEM.

Gotta figure something to do about the O-Line. Didnt expect them to be that bad after the good reports coming out of camp.

Hey, We can't go undeafeted by the road to Tampa Bay has not been carpet bombed - WOOO - HOOO!

Jose gives Game Ball's out after each contest. Even though we live in America and your supposed to be ashamed of yourself if you don't win I really don't care. I always support the fantastic efforts and sacrifice these athletes put up.

    - Punter Jeff Ruiz: the block punt was not on him since it was obvious the blocking in front wasn't executed well enough. After that his was nearly flawless. We were always at odds with field possession except for the Lemon INT and Smiths punt return. Had it not been for Ruiz things would have been MUCH, MUCH, worse.

-Rashard Smith - true freshman #2 (my old football number). A Playa' and you know it. He is only going to get better and this guy getting out of SEC country is absolutely ludicrous - he has a HUGE upside and he gets a game ball because he played his game tonight and brought GREAT energy.

    - Offense is really, really tough to spot stand outs because we never got into a rhythm- either by poor execution of the disruption SC defenders caused ( I will say that SC defense plays a good brand of football indeed). Go with WR Steven Howard, # 85, really impresses me with his exact route running and soft hands. He does not posses quick feet so he will never give Bible the option of sending him a deep patterns (unless a trick play HB pass gives him enough time) but as an underneath chain mover he can be counted on by the QB's to be right where he needs to be, sure handed to boot. We never got into any Red Zone offense which is truly bizarre. When that starts happening then Bible should look at George Bryan and Steven Howard to be go to guys in that all important area. He looked ready to take a prominent role of a receiving corps that is deep and competitive for PT.

Honorable mention for the DE Michael Lemon - that catch looked something straight out of a Nate Irving highlight. He has been practicing the least and plays a huge back up role to Willie Young on field side DE. He looked the part of a dynamic DE that can really take care of his assignment.

Another honorable to James Washington, another true freshman that we HAVE to be loving in Red & White. We don't know the status of Eugene and it goes witout saying that his presence is huge for this ball club. The luxury of seeing Washington run the way he did is that he and Baker are truly on opposite ends of the style spectrum. Baker will burst and bang with the best of him - folks that knee looked strong - really strong powering back 2 sometimes 3 or 4 would be tacklers. But Washington has the stride to make it into the hole and completely BREAK LB's ankles. That long stride - plant foot - and angle off is so fluid that it is reminiscent of throw back players off days gone by - Sayers, Dorsett and so many other great backs that just glided and shifted with ease. Now days all these players stutter step and react too much IMO - that or just lower the shoulder and plow.

We'll have more on this later, but someone should give some love to Freshmen Earl Wolff. Kid had 8 tackles in his first game.

Nice spot WPP on getting that up to our attention for Wolff. I did mention late, LATE, last night that I thought the newbies, including Wolff, played a good brand of football. My guess is that Wolf probably led us in special teams tackles and that is a great sign of a great fundamental tackler.

Thanks for doing yoemens work covering all the facets of the game. I am again very impressed by strides this site is taking early on. Pretty soon I'm going to start following you guys around like a bad Mentos commercial just to be look the part of Bad Ass crew - Mento's jive show my age some?

One clarification I wanted to make before we get into the season and folks start a campaign to out the WR corps as traitors.

Watched some of the highlights again this am - still pretty amped about the game opener even after practically no sleep.

I noticed the "drop" in the end zone was not quite what it seemed to be last night in the stadium (watched a little tape this morning in case I bump into any Coaching staff). The camera angle ESPN had was right behind the action and it was crazy how two SC defenders skied high in front of Smith and crossed each other just as the ball came through. It looked like a needle coming thru a haystack and Smith was completely shielded from it at the last second. The ball didn't even come close to hitting his hands but drilled him in the bicep.

We had a closer chance on our last play where Williams and the DB went up and came down with their hands both on the ball and if Williams has just a few more finger tips higher along the pigskin then we take the lead in dramatic fashion.

What if's and game of inch's - you know the drill.

All in all very impressed in how we gained some composure- finally- in the second half. SC still never gave any qrt on the defense but atleast we looked more assertive and gave ourself's a chance to make the plays. We didn't make them when we needed but it was a far cry from the first half when we weren't in sync and couldn't execute a maneuver out of a wet paper sack.
